Hawg
As far as I can tell in Minnesota if your house weighs over 3000#'s you need a yearly license plate and brakes. Is this the way it is? There are a lot of houses obviously overweight without brakes. What do I say when I go to get a license? I don't have brakes and I'm over 3000#'s, what's my lie? randerson
They won't even ask if it has breaks just what it weighs and the load capacity axel rating is what I have found when I have registered my trailer and I used the DMV in your area
castmaster
I also dont think they ask when you register it at the DMV. Where you might run into problems is if you get pulled over on the highway. With the state always looking for ways to bring in more revenue it wouldnt surprise me in the least if troopers are told to start checking for it.I guess to me if a guy is the sort who is willing to fib to a government "tax" collector best bet would be to title it as under 3000#'s. Otherwise, if your stopped, seeing the plate tells an officer the trailer is of weight to need brakes, so why doesnt it have them?As a side note, I had just looked this stuff up not long ago when I was looking at a new enclosed trailer. The law actually reads that ANY trailer manufactured after June 30, 1988 must have brakes on all wheels. Kind of unclear whether they are still referencing trailers over 3000#'s or in fact ANY trailer made after that date. If its the latter, there are a TON of boat, snowmobile, utility etc trailers made after that date with no brakes on them sold and used in this state. 2thepointsetters
I wonder what happens when a truck pulling a trailer over 3000 lbs without brakes rear ends another vehicle. Does your insurance still cover you? Also could you get pulled over at MNDOT stop and fined for illegal equipment?
Redlineracer12
Lighten your house up. Under 3,000 you don't need plates or yearly tabs (you can get lifetime sticker). Over 3,000 you have to get tabs every year and deal with brakes, gross.
Chad Holst
If you are over 3000Lbs you need brakes. Not just because the law says so, but because we all drive on the same roads as you and you NEED breaks...lol. If your house is over 3,000Lbs it needs a yearly license plate.($ based on weight) If its under 3000lb it can get a lifetime license ($55). Both are licensed as a utility/recreational trailer. It also needs Height lights if over 80" tall. A License plate light. Side marker lights..etc...Here is a link that will give info as of 5/12. Nisswaguy
Mine is over #3000 and has brakes. I just got the renewal in the mail. $18. $1.50/month over the course of a year and worth avoiding any of the "what if" headaches IMHO. crappie55409
Its nice to read this if this is true. i have an old winnebego camper (60's 70's) that i converted into a fishouse and i dont have tabs or a license plate on it and i trailor it all over the state. I always wondered if i was supposed to.
Hawg
I don't think the Highway Patrol bugs fish houses much, but that could change with a couple accidents. I don't see brakes on many manufactured house either and they have to be over 3000#'s. 3000 isn't much for a wheel house. Isn't just about any house 12 ft or more at or above 3000# ? The places that sell them have to make sure registration and title are done, just like when buying a car. I dont think any dealership is going to sell a house that they have to lie on the registration, when so many house builders are honest. The thing that is being missed here..why wouldn't YOU require breaks, if your at 2,500+ lbs? I dont know about you, but i want to be able to stop, especially when winter is going in MN. I can see maybe a guy that moves his house 1 mile down the road, sits it there all season, then 1 mile back home. But even then, i hope he never plans on selling it. its not often that someone that puts this kind of money into a 3,000lb+ fish house is going to use it ONLY on his 1 mile away lake. We take these things up to Red, Leech, etc... it only takes one moron in front of you to ruin your day, and his... Get breaks.

If you NEED to lie about this, I'd lie to the DMV to get the lifetime registration sticker, but still put the brakes on the house. Brakes are an absolute must for over 3,000 pounds. I put brakes on my 8x12, for the simple fact that I knew I'd be close to 3k, and for my own safety and the safety of everyone on the road. You should be able to get setup for $250 or so, assuming your spindles are setup for brakes. I think you also need a breakaway kit.

Isn't just about any house 12 ft or more at or above 3000# ? I can't speak for any of the other manufactured houses, but the 8' wide Yetti was the only one that had brakes. Both the 6.5x12 or 6.5x16 are rated at a max weight of 2990 for this reason.
Chad Holst
Is that with what they calculate as a fully loaded and ready to travel house, or is this THEIR weight before you add a couple propane tanks, your gear, a few cases of adult beverage and your generator? If Yetti is selling the roller, unloaded, with-out breaks, when they know that it will be a 3,000+ trailer...then they will never get my business, and they WILL get bad PR from me. I doubt they would do this though, they seem to make great houses, and why cut the corner on something little like this, to avoid the laws? On top of that, what are you going to do when you travel to SD,ND, WI, IA, ...where the weight law could be less.
Hawg
I'm guessing the fault is all on me, I just assumed most fish houses didn't have brakes. Heck for $250 I'd put them on in a heartbeat. I wonder why Don at Miltona Blacksmith didn't even bring them up? It's my first big wheelhouse, 8x16,and I'm sure it's going over 3000#'s isn't it? I do think there are a lot more big houses out there than you all think w/o brakes.
