Drill question for those of you with a Nils drill/hand auger.

Hey guys, hope you can help me out here.

I just purchased a 6" Nils hand auger with the cordless drill option. Nils recommends an 18v or better cordless drill, and I had an 18v Black and Decker drill so I thought I'd be set(I realize B&D isn't top of the line or anything, but still...).

I went to try it out, not actually drilling a hole, but just attaching the drill to the auger, and much to my dismay, the drill literally doesn't fit the auger attachment. The chuck on the drill doesn't open wide enough to fit it in at all.

So my question: For those of you who have this auger, what drill do you use? How can I be sure that if I buy a new drill it will have a large enough opening to fit the auger attachment? I know next to nothing about drills, I just have one for the occasional weekend warrior job.

I'm not sure on this because I haven't seen the drill attachment end on the nils (orange drill conversion one) but I would suspect it needs a 1/2" chuck. I'm thinking that your b&d drill might come with a 3/8" chuck. The reason why it won't fit. If this is the case look for a 1/2" chuck drill or possibly buy a 1/2" chuck to replace the one on your drill. BUT it might get costly and be a better option just to buy a brand new drill.
