Managed Forest Land for public use

Recommended Posts

Has anyone ever hunted land in this program. I was looking at a map of a property and was having a hard time finding the access to it. The owner listed is not local. Is there an online map I am not aware of that shows this info. Any suggestions or info would be greatly appreciated.

From the WI NDR site on MFL and FCL.

"Landowners with MFL-Open and FCL lands are required to allow access across their MFL-Closed or non-tax law lands if other reasonable access is not readily available. In these situations, landowners may post signs indicating the preferred access route for the public to access the open lands. The public should contact landowners to ask where the access is if it is not readily apparent."

If the landowner has no legal access to the MFL-Open or FCL land, how do I access those properties?

"You would need to contact the adjacent property owner and ask permission to cross his or her land to get to the MFL-Open or FCL lands."

I pay bookoo bucks in property taxes to keep my land free from trespassers. Unless the state is willing to forgive my taxes, there's no way on God's green earth that I'm letting somebody else use my land as an easement to access MCL-open, or FCL land. Anyone foolish enough to test me will have a sit-down with the sheriff, and can expect to pay a 4 figure "access fee" to me for crossing my land. Adjacent land owners shouldn't be expected to open their lands to crossing just because their neighbors are getting the tax advantages of FCL or MCL designation. Our 5th Amendment protects us from the gov't taking the use of our land away from us without just compensation. Forcing us to allow trespassing does just that!

Here's the actual WDNR answer to the access question:

Landowners with MFL-Open and FCL lands are required to allow access across THEIR MFL-Closed or non-tax law lands if other reasonable access is not readily available. In these situations, landowners may post signs indicating the preferred access route for the public to access the open lands. The public should contact landowners to ask where the access is if it is not readily apparent.

This means that a person cannot legally access MCL/FCL lands via adjacent private properties not owned by the MCL/FCL owner.
