Bore Sight

Recommended Posts

How accurate is a bore sighter? I am shooting an 870 express combo, I had a mishap and the scope broke, it was a red dot. I have a bore sighter, just wondering how accurate they are of if I should just switch to the long barrel with the open sight.

I appreciate any feedback and advice

Bore Sights are just a means to get you on the paper so you can then make your fine adjustments with your scope so you can end up hammering tacks with your shot group. For some it might be right on the money and you won't have to make any adjustments, but odds are that you will have to make some adjustments.

When I went to sight in my rifle for the first time it was bore sighted before I started shooting. I was a good 8-10 inches low and left at 100 yards when I started shooting. Bore sighting the gun got me on paper right away but beyond that all bets are off.

I wouldn't hunt with any gun that you haven't fired at paper first to see where you're actually hitting.

I will be switching to the standard barrel and open sight for this year, I owe it to the animal for a good clean kill. If it is like other years, which judging by only getting 3 deer on my trail cameras since July, it will be, I won't ahve to worry about shooting again this year.

Yep, bore sighting will save you some shells when you do the real sighting in. A few groups of 3 shots will get you where you need to go from there, then come back and fine tune it to make sure that you are right on.

Once you have done that, find a big buck and get a good case of buck fever and have it all go haywire!
