i got 2 last year and luv em so much that just got another 2 online (okuma 2/3), have to pull line out by hand but that is a much lesser of 2 evils for me compared to always dealing with the line twists and slinky effect on spincast reels. awesome for 10ft or less, by I am happy to deal with it in deeper water, line twisting wrapping around handle or such is a major pita to me in wind or super cold conditions (I prefer outside to inside on the ice)

I don't understand the line twist issue... are people really having that much trouble with line twist on their ice fishing spinning reels? I have never had an issue with line twist; so I don't get why this would be a reason to switch to straight line reels. Are you sure you are putting the line on your reel the right way when you spool it up?

I've said it before, I'll say it again. If you are using mono, simply stretch out 5 or 6 arm lengths of line before you drop your bait on each trip out. You shouldn't have any line twist the rest of the day.

I tried a straight line reel, the Eagle Claw inline reel, for first time last year and I was surprisingly impressed with its performance. No line twist (which can be fixed as DTro commented above simply enough) and most small jigs took the line out easily enough with the free spool feature on it. It worked great in shallow water (25' or less) and I didn't mind pulling out line to get jigs down faster when I was fishing deeper. Certainly seemed faster than doing it with spinning reels, which occupy 10 out of my 11 ice rods. I would recommend trying one out for the $30 price that many are at, like the Eagle Claw or the Frabill inline reel. I don't know if I'll buy anymore, but I do like the one I have. It was worth the $30 to try one out.
