I've seen some oysters and a very expired COTW. What are some good ones to look for in the fall? Being new to mushroom hunting are there any worth looking for this time of year that do not have any evil look alikes? Thanks, Erik

In my rather limited and localized Big Woods remnant's experience, the best "easy" late season are oysters, chickens, hens, shaggies, puffballs, lobsters and the Hericiums. A lot of these start pumping in sept. though, and, while it has been a very favorable fall, think your going to be pretty hard pressed to find much out there right now.

Yep, the honeys were thick this year, and they *might* still be available. I did find a nice batch of them a few days ago.

The aborted entolomas are also out and about in the fall (though you might find them in summer, too...I tend to find most of mine in September and October while hunting for hens). They're safe, easy to identify, and tasty. Another good one--the meadow mushroom--is also one you'll find mostly in cooler weather, though make sure you identify it with certainty, as there are a few look-alikes that'll give you some GI problems.
