Crow Hunter
I have a 75 horse Mariner motor. It started making a bit of a noise last week when starting, like trying to start a car when it is already running, but not nearly that bad. Now when i turn the key, the starter motor turns, the throwout bearing engages the flywheel, then it just makes a bad screeching noise. I can turn the flywheel with my hand, so it is not that. Can I assume the starter motor needs to be replaced? Thanks for any help.
boatfixer
The starter makes noise but the flywheel is not spinning? Sounds like its time for a new starter
givetoget
is there a keyway on the starter gear that came out or sheared?
boatfixer
It's a helical gear/shaft
Crow Hunter
Thanks guys. I don't see how it can be anything but the starter motor.
wastewaterguru
Several places in the cities can rebuild/repair starters at reasonable prices. Much cheaper than replacing.
Crow Hunter
WWG, if you know the names of these places to get a starter rebuilt, I would like to know who they are, saving money is always good. If you can't post them here please email me at uitdenbogerd at q.com, thanks. I am in Inver Grove Heights.

Deershooter
I had the same problem with my motor. It ended up being the battery wasn't fully charged. I would try that first before you get the starter rebuilt.
