Well fella's a need some advice. Been looking at a new home with hot water base board heat and NO air conditioner. Can a guy still get central a/c installed and how or would we be stuck with a window/wall unit? This is a rambler with basement finished.

Do you have a sizable attic? I'm sure a rambler would have. You can put an air handler up there and run duct in the attic through out the house. For the basement perhaps you can find a closet or two to run 2 ducts from the attic to through the main floor to the basement ceiling. And of course one big return air in a hallway. Nowadays everything it getting quieter you wont even notice the noise. Or option B would be a mini split system which is a register that hangs on the wall and lines go outside to a condenser, you can get one condenser to run up to 3 registers inside the house. Option C Window units.

Of course you can, just depends on how much you want to spend and how much reno work you'll have to do. Should be pretty easy being its a rambler, just need to run power, lines to outside unit, ducting and return lines throughout the basement, pop them through the floors and walls, and build soffits around them. Just be sure they limit the amount of flex ducting they run to where they absolutely can't run rigid, flex lines slow your airflow considerably unless pulled tight.

I have exactly the same situation. I had "attic air" installed. It doesn't go to the basement by that doesn't seem to be needed.

We have a rambler, and it works great. We had considered those split units that are sort of like a window unit but ended up with the attic air. All the vents are in the ceiling, as is the air return. Compressor is outside.

Works great. quite efficient. Any questions, feel free to post or pm me.

(we lived in the house with only a big window unit through the wall for like 20 years before biting bullet)
