where to buy an ar-15 upper

Recommended Posts

I have a early 90's colt that has a non removable carrying handle and elevated front sight. I am looking for a flat top upper so I can mount a scope to it. Anyone know of a local place to get a complete upper assembly that wont break the bank?

Jeff,

You may want to check out Palmetto State Armory online, they are having some weekend deals. As for close ones, I know in Brainerd here the Mills Shooting Center has Korstog and Huldra receivers.

Before buying your new upper, make sure the take-down and pivot pins on your Colt lower will fit in your new upper. "Early" Colt lowers used pins that were (I think...) .315" dia. While the majority of current "mil-spec" upper receivers, and built uppers, use a .250" dia pin.

I have heard of special pin set-ups to allow the mixing of the two different sizes, but have no personal experience with these.

thanks for the replies and the heads up on the possible pin differences.....so far I haven't found anything locally that I don't have to order yet. I would like to have something ready to be sighted in within the next 2 weeks. I may have to just buy another complete ar to accomplish this if I cant find anything.

The offset pin does work to mate a small hole upper to a large hole lower, but the rifle no longer should be pivoted open as the pin can act as an eccentric, applying lots of pressure to the pin bosses on the lower, possibly breaking them.

When an offset pin is used it should be installed after the rear pin, and removed before the rear pin when wanting to takr apart the rifle for cleaning, etc.
