Migration has started.

A couple evenings ago, just before dusk, I observed literally dozens of night hawks flying over. I was walking the dog in the nature area by the college when I noticed the birds. At first I thought they were gulls. Then I saw the bars on the wings. What threw me was that they were totally silent. Whenever I've observed one before, it was always making a strange noise. The next day I googled it and read that migration runs from about Aug. 15 - Sept. 10 and at times up to a thousand can be seen at a time. They can be observed starting 2 hours before sundown and are quiet during this flight. It was quite the sight.

Also saw my first blackbirds today since mid summer. They're starting to move through, also. The way it feels today, I don't think the birds need to be in much of a hurry.
