classic j hook decoy spread for rivers???

Recommended Posts

Just wondering what is the best decoy setup for small rivers, ,should a person use the classic j hook pattern, by setting up a line of decoys on oppisite side of river that your blind is on or should it be set up right in front of blind???

I find that classic U shapes and J patterns don't work that well in regards to puddle ducks, it just doesn't seem natural. I would do two groups about ten yards apart. It gives them room to land in the middle and well looks more real.

I believe a little reading on the subject would show the J hook pattern is pretty much designed for big water diving duck set-ups. Nothing says it might not draw a large flock of Mallards or P'tails on occasion. A couple little clusters with a nice space in the middle is fine. And you don't need 350 decoys either for puddle ducks. Have shot many a limit of greenheads with a half dozen throw down Dekes on a tiny pothole.

It's all fun!!
