Honda ES shifting problem and speedometer

I have a 2000 Honda Forman ES. At times it will stay in a selected gear and not shift up or down. If I shut it off with the key and turn it back on, rock the machine I can get it to shift back to neutral and restart. The shifter then seems to work for a while. Just recently the speedo quite working, just shows 0. I had replaced the battery because it wasn't holding a charge. Since then I have been having problems. Any help would be great. Thank you.

I'll let MacGyver tell you best advice, but what helped me on my '03 is to make sure the battery has good charge. I still get a bit of prob when VERY cold but leaving trickle charger on in winter has fixed me 98%.

There is some adjustment that folks here told me about, but I have not done it yet.

Does it flash any codes and have you ever replaced the angle sensor? This was a common issue on the older ES models.

There are test procedures you can find on the net that will walk you through the test better than I can describe it here, or they run about 60 bucks from Honda if you want to take the gamble.

Here is a location pic.

Thank you for the quick responses. The battery is brand new. Replaced because I thought it might help, and the old one was 6 years old. Thanks Mac I will look for the sensor and see if I can replace it or if I can get lucky enough to just have a bad connection.

At Macgyver55 I had the same problem but my shifter was clicking when shifting but numbers wont go down so I replace the battery to a $100 gel battery from autozone and sudden my shifter start working my question is should I still look at the angle sensoror is there other problems to it?
