using a landing net?

This past weekend after maybe too many hours on the water one of my buddy's threw this one out there.

"where in the reg book does it address using a landing net when you're fishing?"

Heck, we've all used them for years and I'm sure in the book it talks about solely using a landing style net for catching suckers in the Spring but is there anywhere that addresses it. For example we've all had a fish up to the surface and it's about to be scooped in the net and the hook comes out and the fish get's netted.

Nothing like time on the water to come up with this type of stuff...

I guess I don't understand the question...are you asking if it's legal to use one or not?

• It is unlawful to possess on, or near waters, a net or any device that

can take fish. The exceptions are angling equipment and landing nets

used for angling, seines, and traps for taking minnows for bait, and as

otherwise specifically authorized.

About the fish coming unhooked at the surface and scooped up with the net. I'm as guilty as they come in that department.

Well, the way i see it, the fish was brought to the net via your hook. So...I say close enough. Put it in the livewell. smile

Also, i bet there are just as many fish lost from the net man. shocked

Caught my first Chinook on friday...Net man almost screwed that one up.

By the time the fish was in the boat the treble ring was mangled and came off of the husky jerk.

Truth, I have a bunch of husky jerks that have lost those "rings" and I dont even fish salmon. No doubt those fish are tough on equipment.

OP, I guess the question is pertaining to whether or not it is legal to keep the fish since it was brought into the boat using the net and not still hooked?

Never even put much thought into that before, but its an interesting question. I can probably count on one hand the number of times that has happened, but where the net lost a fish, thats another story.

thanks fellas. Just a question that we discussed while bobbing out on the lake. I never considered letting a fish go merely due to that fact and yes I'm sure more fish are banged off by bad netting technique than anything.

MAny times with cranks the hooks are ripped out by the net while lifting it in so while it may seem like you saved the fish you may actually just ripped the hooks out. I also agree that if you did managed to save one that got free at the boat, you had it to the boat via a hook and line and that is how it was "netted" I would think that is a caught by hook and line fish.
