Pine Cones

UMC

Recommended Posts

I have what I believe is a Red Pine tree - an old mature one. I've lived in the house for 4 summers and every summer the tree drops cones like crazy. I've never lived with a pine before and I'm just wondering if this is normal or if it is maybe a sign that the tree is nearing its end. As far as I can tell, the tree is healthy but I've raked up over 100 gallons of pine cones in the last 10 days out of the grass (which has been about normal for the late June in the summers I've lived here - it usually seems to peak about the end of June and drop few after July). Thanks

Does the tree have long or short needles?? Are the needles coarse or fine??

Its natural for a tree thats dying to try and reproduce itself, last summer was very dry, it could be under stress but if its been doing the same thing for four years I would say its just the normal cone producing process. I have several Norways spruces that produce a lot of cones every year, the little red squirrels love them, they take apart so many cones thats its almost like a soft mulch under the tree.

Needles are in bundles of two, probably about 3-4" long. I would say they are somewhat coarse but I'm not what fine would be. It's not a spruce if that's what you're wondering. Somewhat orangish tint to the bark.
