Spaying my dog question

Had my dog at the vet today, she very strongly recommended having my lab spayed very soon to limit the risk of developing pyometra. She's approx 5 years old. My vet is a very well know vet in the Burnsville area, so I'm thinking I better do it. What do you all think? Also, what's the going rate for the procedure? She's pretty spendy, without risking experience for a few bucks, any recommendations on a quality vet?

I had two dogs that were in tact and developed pyrometria... Not good. It can very easily be fatal. I have since began the practice of spaying non-breeding dogs and spaying after the last breeding for those that are being bred. Just spayed a 7 year old dog that will NOT be bred. I think I'm sure i know who you are talking about.... Probably one of the best vets in the state... But with that comes a cost. In the end, my vet charges a lot more for a routine spaying than the last time I had one done... Probably almost double what an emergency spaying was 12 years ago....

If you are not going to breed, it is probably wise to move a head with the spaying. If she is within a hundred dollars of everyone else, maybe it'd be easy to justify the addl money knowing she will be ini great hands.

Molly's sister is going to be bred... I know where my next dog incoming from! I was impressed with that breeding... Wish I'd had kept one.

Is the vet you are referring to Fran S.? If so, she is one of the best and yes, she comes at a price. If she is thinking it would be a good idea, I would go on her rocommendation. We (and a number of our breeder friends) use Inver Grove Heights Animal Hospital for all our repro work, even though they are a 40 minute drive for us. I think they are as good as her and they are a little cheaper.

Ya, it who you think it is. Ken, Molly has been a real treat to have. Do you guy's recommends pre-surgical blood work done and/or IV fluids-they asked. I haven't had a chance to talk in further detail about it yet. But, it adds up to 175.00 to the price.

The dog I just had done, for everything... was $400. I do get a 10% off so I guess my bill was mid 300...

I don't believe they did the pre-op stuff... Unless it was done just prior to surgery. Dropped her off at 8am and picked her up at 5 pm. Whatever they did was done in that time frame for that amount. I have been using Dr. Dan for almost everything for about 20 years... so I just trust him to do what's right and what needs to be done.

I'm glad Molly has served you well... The one I will get a pup out of is probably one of the best natural pheasant dogs that I have ever seen. Does a great job n ducks also given the minimal training she recieved. i'm not much of a line breeder, but I will most likely breed back to a son of Sam... I'd love for all those attributes to come out in the next litter.

Has she fully cemented her relationship with your wife?

Gentlemen, allow me to add: Abigail Jane, as of a month ago, will always remain a Miss and never a Mrs. It is a secret between me and my vet and Abby does not need to know. My vet charged $375 and that included all blood work, because I wanted to know about her overall health in addition to her ability to hendle the surgery.

He did a masterful job with a small incision. Abby has bounced (literally) right back and at 6.5 mos is taking L-R hand signals and uses her nose like one of those leaf sucking trucks you see in the fall on small town streets.

I have -with one exception-spayed all my dogs; and I have had some pretty hi falutin' blood lines in my houses. I am one of those old fahrts you hear from time to time who began lamentng, thirty years ago, that people wuz messin' up the breed. I figure the last thing the world needs is one more color in a Lab and one resulting from the mix of a 125 pound male and a 100 pound female. Leave the breeding to breeders and pray they are not the greedy miscreants who live off "designer dogs."

Remember: the GS (great spirit) decreed, decades ago, that Labrador Retrievers would be black.
