Boy she's growin' slow...

So I make these genuine attempts at helping people grow great veggies and then the weather throws a big rusty wrench in the middle of all of it!

We sure had the right starting weather with lots of random rain fall, but where did the heat go? Here we are what June 9th, 10th, and up here in NW MN today was about the "hottest" day we've seen thus far! I think it might have reached all the way up to 72-74 degrees!!!

Kinda thought once the ice was off the lakes, post-opener crazy we'd see the weather turn for the better at least a little????

If I didn't know better, looking back on the last half dozen spring seasons, I'd say she's getting just a bit later, and later, each year.

Geeezzz, I can't even voice how happy I am I moved back up north! cry

You're right.

This has been good weather for radishes, onions, peas, lettuce and the members of the cabbage family. Not so good or corn, melons and peppers that like more heat. They are basically just sitting there waiting for the temps to go up.

This is what scares me even down here in the banana belt. I could take the gamble and plant some of that early season stuff yet, knowing full well come about July it could turn the burners on and makes my efforts futile. Farmers with pea contracts and canning company people must be having an absolute nightmare. Very few fields of peas have been planted in the area.

On the other hand, I know I still have plenty of warm season stuff that is going to run out of time pretty quick if this weather doesn't straighten out soon. After last night's .5" rain, there was water standing on the edge of the unplanted garden, again. The weather doesn't warm up and it doesn't dry off. This is why I laugh when I read about suggestions to stab stuff in and mulch. I want it to warm up and dry off, not stay cold and wet, in addition to not having time to diddle around with that right now. smile I still have plenty of options but it sure won't be the garden we've become accustomed to. frown

You know I was in the garden last night after a 5 day trip "Up North" and I was ready to lament the cold spring and early summer.

But really... All the cold weather crops like Potatoes, onions, spinach and peas are doing really great with their strong start.

The Tomatoes, I was afraid that they would be spindly and dieing or something... But actually the cold weather have given them really thick stalks... Some of the strongest Stalks I've ever had on tomatoes, even going back to my best years... Gave a light finger test on the root ball... And the roots I felt were thick and strong on a large ball.

If we get some warm weather, they will have strong root base and thick delivery system to really help produce a strong crop.

Now I'm a silver lining type of guy and all... But this is actually starting to look like a "Blessing in Disguise."

So long as we assume some decent warm weather is on the way for the two hottest months of the calendar year!

So far my garden in St. Paul has been looking pretty good. Of course it was a little bit of a late start but between the 2 spots I am gardeing this year we have 20 tomato plants that are all looking real good and strong, one Roma is starting to produce small fruit.

Peas, beans, potatoes, and carrots are all sprouted and well on their way. Also my herb garden is doing well.

Its also been good growing conditions for the new grass seed I put out a couple weeks back.
