Recommendations on fishing charters in Outer Banks, NC

Recommended Posts

Wife and I are headed to The Outer Banks in NC this august, staying in Hatteras. Does anyone have any recommendations on a charter outfit to use? Any tips or things to watch for? Other than a lake superior charter, this is my first time doing a charter trip.

Thanks,

Mojo

My family owns a house in Avon and I go as often as I can but most years I only get down that way in November since I moved here. The fishing is different at that time of year. Fishing off the beach is a lot of fun. With a permit, you can drive a 4X4 right out on the beach. A sand spike and a light rod baited with shrimp will catch you some fish out of the surf.

I love live bait fishing for king mackerel on the Miss Hatteras head boat. They run full and half day trips at the time of year you are going. The full day trips are further offshore and they catch snapper, trigger fish and maybe a king mackerel, cobia or amberjack. If you are lucky, you may get a mahi mahi. You pay per person on a head boat so you will be fishing with people you do not know. I have always loved head boat fishing.

I have gone out with Rick Caton before on a regular charter. He is a bit crusty but he will put you on fish. He runs a great family trip where you pull crab traps and do some inshore fishing if you have young kids. His son, Patrick Caton, also has a charter boat now as well. Both of these boats fish out of Oden's Dock in Hatteras. One of my favorite restaurant is at Oden's Dock - The Breakwater. Risky Business Seafood - also at Oden's Dock - is also a great place to buy seafood to take home and cook. I like the business at Oden's Dock. Teach's Lair also has a good reputation for quality charters.

We have fished down in Ocracoke with Captain Norman Miller on the Rascal. He is also a bit crusty but a very good fisherman. Ocracoke is a one hour free ferry ride from Hatteras and well worth the visit.

Not to be a downer but you are going at the peak of hurricane season. Are you renting from one of the rental companies like Hatteras Realty, Midgett or Surf and Sound? If you are offered trip insurance, I would highly recommend getting it for that time of year. My wife is a hurricane magnet so she is banned from the Outer Banks in July, August, September, October and the first half of November.

Thanks mpester for the great tips! I am definitely going to do travel insurance, but I appreciate you keeping your wife out of the area in August. On the regular off-shore charter boats, if there are only 2 of us, how would I get paired up with a foursome to have a full boat and keep cost as low as possible?

All of the marinas do make-up charters. They will divide the normal cost of a full charter by how many people they get to fill the make-up charter. Just stop by the marina store - office and tell them you are looking for an offshore make-up charter. They will put you on a list and call you if they have a make-up charter going on the day you want. Wish I were able to get to the OBX area more often. I am drawing a bit of a blank right now but I think there are three marinas in Hatteras Village. Oden's Dock is my favorite. Teach’s Lair is the second marina. The last one I can think of is Hatteras Harbor. Remembered the last one - Hatteras Landing down by the ferry - so there are four marinas that I can think of in Hatteras Village. Good luck.

Check out godspeedcharters.com

Was out with them last September and had a great trip.

Check out the OBX fishing report portion of his page, scroll to the bottom and you can see years worth of fishing reports by month. Check out September 16 & 17 of 2012---our 2 days with Dave & Justin. Great guys and they will do their best to get you on a mix of eating fish and billfish.

It's a great area, enjoy!

Sorry it took me so long. Haven't been on the board lately. $1600 per day + a tip for the mate. All the boats seem to be about the same price. We will be going back to Hatteras and we will certainly go out with Dave & Justin again.

Good Luck!

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
