I am new to the morel world and was wondering if anyone could offer any info like what conditions to look for to find them? I have access to a lot of timber area. Also plenty of public ground but I think that gets looked over pretty well. I am located in sw mn. Any input is appreciated. Thanks

I'm pretty much a nub too, but what I've gathered so far is elm trees are best, especially if some of the bark is peeling off. Old apple orchards too. I believe ash and maple are okay but oak not so much? Early in the year look for sun exposed areas (top of hills, south facing) and late in the season the opposite.

Hopefully some other more experienced shroomers will chime in too

Thanks for the reply. I plan on going out this week to see what I can find.

The easiest way to find them will be to concentrate on the dead elm trees. You can find them other places, but will spend a lot more time looking between patches. Also, at least in the metro area, this week will be too early to find anything significant. Possibly next week if we get some rain. Judging from the undergrowth in the woods now, I'm guessing that I'll really start finding them in my areas in about 2 weeks or so. Cross your fingers for rain. That's what we really need to hope for right now if we want a good mushroom crop. Good luck!
