What to fill striped gopher holes with on my lawn??

Several years ago when the striped gophers on my yard start digging by the house and bringing up the drainage rock by my foundation, I started waging war on them, trapping them and blasting a few with the shotgun. Then I take dirt and fill the holes. Problem is, that works for awhile, then the next gopher comes along and digs the hole out, even months later. Its almost like they can 'smell' the old hole. Dirt just doesn't go down far enough. I've tried gravel and pea rock on the theory that it will go farther down the hole, then I just fill the last two inches with dirt. Seems to work better but I worry about the rocks that get dug back out, getting picked up by the mower, and going thru a window.

So my next idea is sackcrete, I've got a couple bags left over from a project, I could mix up half a five gallon bucket and fill some holes. Or do you think it would solidify if I just dumped it down the hole dry.

What do you think about the sackrete idea?

I live in the country, I'm not that anal about he lawn, anything green will do, but if you don't fill the holes they just get bigger and bigger, plus they encourage more striped bastages to move in.

On a side note, the advantage of trapping them early is that you avoid the litters of small ones later, trapped my first one Sat. smile
