fluorocarbon line vs leader

cylinder

Question

What's the difference between 14 lb fluoro line that is 100% fluorocarbon and and 14 lb fluoro leader material? I'm suspecting that when they put it in a 25 yard spool and call it leader material it somehow increases in value. I've always just bought a 150 yard spool and disposed of what I didn't use at the end of the year. Thoughts?

yes, for the most part you are correct. Like anything if you buy smaller quantities you often pay more. Some prefer the smaller packaging, as it fits better in tackle boxes and such. But I think you will be fine continuing on as you are. If you really want to save some money, pull off a bunch and put it in a ziplock to bring with you. Store the rest of the line in a cool, dry and most importantly dark place. You then will not need to throw your line at the end of the season. I have line that is pushing 5 years old and seem no worse the wear.

I run almost exclusively powerpro, majority of my rods have 6-10#flouro tied to the PP as a leader with a Uni-Uni knot (Best for casting, strength, etc) in 4' to 10' lenghts, I'll go as much as 20' length for cranks on Mille Lacs.

When fishing rivers, no leader. Clear lakes i use a leader.

I run PLINE Flouroclear in 4#-6# ice fishing, and buy the regular "Summer" sized spools. No difference except cost when getting smaller spools.

There actually is a difference between fluoro line and fluoro leader. Basically it boils down to the fact that the fluoro line is made to be softer, which in turn causes it to lose some of its abrasion resistance. The fluoro line is still better than mono, just not quite as good as a the fluoro leader material.
