Fishing the Smaller Crankbaits

What setups do you guys find best for fishing smaller crankbaits like the SK KVD 1.5, Series 3, Xcalibur Xcs200's, Rapala DT6's and other similar baits. I like using the KVD 2.5's or Rapala DT10s, but when I switch to the smaller 1.5 or a series 3, I just don't seem to have the same feel for the bait. I use baitcast gear with 10lb flurocarbon. I also do use a snap swivel. Just wondering what others use for this.

Also, under what conditions do you find that these work better than the larger sizes.

Thanks.

I got a 7' Shimano Compre crankbait rod (TC4 blank) last year and it worked well with smaller crankbaits. It's medium action which is maybe too light, but it's fun fighting fish on it. I paired it with a Citica and 12' fluoro.

Smaller crankbaits just don't displace as much water as the bigger billed cranks so you're not going to feel them working quite as much.

I like throwing Sub Warts or Bandit cranks over the tops of weeds or in shallow water. This works well for numbers, but I don't catch many big fish on shallow crankbaits. Tried throwing a 1.5 several times last year, but didn't have much luck with them. Then again, the 1.5s I have are natural colors and I fish mostly stained water. Without the rattling, maybe fish have trouble locating them.

I use two different rods - depending on if I'm in or away from cover.

Around cover, I fish shallow cranks on a Powell Squarebill rod, which is 6'9" heavy power. It says X-fast, but it's not - I'd say it's more mod fast. Has a soft tip for roll casting baits even fairly light baits to a target, but plenty of power to haul fish out of cover. I have 17# mono on this rod. It's not a distance caster although it does well enough I guess. But that's not what it's for either. I use it around rushes, wood, docks, over thick coontail - any time I'm spot casting. This rod is also a very good close quarters spinnerbait rod.

In more open water, where I'm over big flats or something, I use a Powell 7'2" Med power mod-fast glass/graphite composite. Has a little lighter power so it's easier to launch a light bait a ways, and it's great for keeping fish hooked. I usually use 12# mono since this rod also does double duty as an away from cover topwater rod - which it's excellent at.

+1 for RK

If there is any cover in the area to fish I go with a heavier setup, Just to get the fish out. something like a med hvy spinnerbait rod. Something you can make shorter accurate cast with. Line size should go up accordingly. Don't be afraid to try braid also. In these types of areas I find it best to think of the crankbait like a jig, It might get hung up, but you might just catch a hog! Dont be afraid to run into cover.

For open water I have a Phenix X10 rod that I love for the smaller baits. A 6.4 to 1 reel since the baits don't dig to hard. I go back and forth between 10 and 12 pound test.

Yeah, I definitely can't pop baits off of weeds with my setup. If I'm fishing heavy cover I either throw something that runs just under the service or I cast to lanes in the vegetation. If I hit the weeds then the bait is coming back to the boat covered.

"Do you think the snap swivel gives them less action and feel or does it really not make a difference."

Use a snap, but not a swivle.Still will have the feelings with a cank, but much simpilar to change.

my opinion is to not use anything. being able to quickly change lures is leaving you with an old knot.Making it a bad situation when you get a big fish on. Learning a good knot only takes a little practice. go to youtube and watch some videos. Find one you like to start and just practice. No worries

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
