Tabata Anyone?

Recommended Posts

Does anyone incorporate Tabata intervals into their workouts? I started doing it last year when getting ready for the Summer Ultimate season and found it to be pretty effective.

I did two different types. One was simply a running interval. 20 seconds at max effort with a 10 second rest. 20 on, 10 off, for a total of 4 mintues. By the end of my first tabata workout my max effort on the last rep was more or less a hands and knees crawl while gasping for air.

The seocnd type we did incorporated plyometrics. We'd mix in several different jumping drills doing each one for 20 seconds, rest for 10, and then move to the next. We'd rotate through the circuit until the 4 minutes was up. Needless to say you feel like you're tied to a cinder block when you start getting close to the 4 minute mark.

Anyone else doing any tabata style workouts? I'll starting to up my workouts as we get into spring in order to get back into shape for ultimate and am always looking for new thigns to try.

Seems like the high intensity ciruit training routines have been getting really popular over the last few years. A couple guys I know were doing the crossfit deal for a couple of months but they got burned out on it after that. They kept trying to get me to join in at the gym but it just wasn't for me. One of them doesn't work out anymore and the other one wrecked his knee. I kept on telling them they were going to hurt themselves rushing through exercises and throwing heavy weight around but they wouldn't listen. Have you guys seen the form these people use when doing crossfit lol? Recipe for disaster imo.

Nofish does tabata incorporate resistance training and weights or is it more cardio styled?

I've seen tabata incorporate resistance training but mostly in Cross Fit workouts. I've personally never done it that way for exactly the reasons you pointed out. Adding weights into a workout like that seems to be an injury waiting to happen. The entire Cross Fit craze is probably another thread entirely. I know a lot of people who do it and most love it and are very involved and have been doing it for years with great results. But I also see the increased risk of injury and likely a high burn out rate.

Every tabata workout I've done has been cardio or plyometric based. All running or jumping type stuff so low chance of injury but very effective.
