srfishin15
Never turkey hunted before, I'd like to give it a try in Minnesota this spring. I didn't get drawn in the lottery so I will be hunting one of the later seasons. Can someone point me in the right direction as far as blinds, calls, decoys, set-ups goes? What am I looking for when scouting as far as picking a location? I have a Remington 870 and I assume I need a full choke? Thanks for any help or advice you can give me. FishinFools
I'll take a shot!1) go get a slate call, and a box call if you like. It's just about too late to practice,2) get an audio tape on calling and hunting turkey. Listen to it. A lot.3) hit a seminar, dnr, GM...anything. Talk to people, get some email addresses,4) get a turkey choke, a box of 3" 4, 5, 6 and go shoot them,5) pick the best pattern and go buy a another box,6) scout, but be mindful of open seasons. DO NOT walk into the woods and ruin some ones hunt. You can learn a great deal by sitting near the access and listening. If you can get out before season, get to know the property, especially anything that would stop a walking turkey: creeks, fences, and the like.7) get a hen decoy, one that is light and quiet.8) I'd skip the blind as a shotgunner. You'll want to stay mobile, as long as you are camo from head to toe (and no white socks, black gloves or red or blue anything...safety first.9) have fun, and don't loose faith if you don't bring home the turkey bacon your first time out.10) see help for your new addiction!Good luck! Powerstroke
srfishin, I started exactly like you did. One year I decided that I really wanted to go turkey hunting, so I did as much research as I could, I bought DVD's and praticed a few calls I bought. I asked lots of questions on here and learned many things from some experienced people. That was 7 or 8yrs ago. Now I've introduced friends and family to turkey hunting and I've now hunted turkeys in 4 states.
