UFC 157

Recommended Posts

The inaugural thread about MMA in our brand new section!

Your thoughts on UFC 157?

I'm super excited for how much WMMA has progressed, and really hope this event turns out well. I wonder how much of the future of the marketability for WMMA rides on Ronda Rousey's shoulders. If she wins, particularly by arm bar again, I think that the promoters can point to the early days of the UFC and how the submission game was catching athletic strikers by surprise and made for surprising outcomes. Unlike the early days where we saw smaller guys submitting larger men however, Ronda has the size advantage in this fight. What I'm hoping for most is simply that it is an outstanding and entertaining fight that will be a building block for WMMA's future growth.

My prediction: I'm going to break the mold and say Ronda Rousey.. by DECISION!

As for the Hendo/Machida fight.. I just hope whoever wins, does it in astounding fashion and finishes it, preferably after the 1st round. As much as I have enjoyed big ol' Jon Jones elbowing his way through former champions, I want to be given the hope that someone can bring to the table the ability to give him some serious problems in a future matchup. The worst thing about this fight is that either Dan or Lyoto will lose, and both are guys I enjoy rooting for. The best thing about this fight is that it is two guys I LOVE to watch. Keep your eyes peeled, it could be fight of the year.

My prediction: As much as I WANT to call it as D.Henderson by overhand right knockout, my money is on The Dragon by KO (punch). Hendo's been able to weather some serious strikes in the past, and I think there is a pretty high likelihood we're (unfortunately) going to see that reputation come crumbling down this weekend, simply because of the cumulative effect that such abuse can have on a body.

I can't find a legal source for machida's karate-kid-kick KO of Randy Couture, otherwise I would have shared it as well laugh

The last fight I saw Machida in with Ryan Bader was rather unimpressive. He wasn't agressive at all (not like the fight he had with Rashad Evans to win the title). I was really dissapointed. He basically won when Bader ran out of patients and got caught on the chin when he was rushing in.

Hendo has a lot of patients, he showed it in that infamous Bisping fight (I agree with one of the best KO's of all time). I think Dan may have a more solid chin than a lot of the guys Machida has fought.

I think Hendo will KO Machida.

I love that there is an MMA thread! I think the Hendo vs. Dragon fight should be awesome. I just wish it was a main event so it would be 5 rounds. If it were 5 rounds I would favor Machida, but in a 3 round fight its too close to call. I can't wait!

How does women's MMA work? Do they go 5, 5 minute rounds?

It seems they go less than a single five minute round wink

And here I was hoping for a TKO in a later round!

To answer the Q though, yes they conform to all the unified rules of MMA. Main events/championship bouts go 5/5, weight classes are the same although only one weight class for women exists in the UFC at this point in time.

I also agree that hendo/machida should be the main event, but rousey is the one that is raking in all the publicity. I'm cheering for the other chick.

all UFC fights are 3, 5 minute rounds unless they are a title fight or a main event. Title fights and main events are 5, 5 minute rounds. It's the same for bothmen and women.

I thought Machida Hendo was a little slow. Uriah looked great. Rhonda didn't dissapoint.

    • Sounds pretty sweet, alright. I will check them out, thanks.
    • If you really want to treat your wife (and yourself) with a remote operated trolling motor, the Minn Kota Ulterra is about easy as it gets.  Auto stow and deploy is pretty awesome.  You just have to turn the motor on when you go out and that the last time you have to touch it.   24V 80lb.  60 inch shaft is probably the right length for your boat.  They ain’t cheap - about $3k - but neither one of you would have to leave your seat to use it all day.
    • Wanderer, thanks for your reply. I do intend for it to be 24 volt, with a thrust of 70-80. Spot lock is a must (my wife is looking forward to not being the anchor person any more).  With my old boat we did quite a lot of pulling shad raps and hot n tots, using the trolling motor. Unlikely that we will fish in whitecaps, did plenty of that when I was younger. I also need a wireless remote, not going back to a foot pedal. We do a fair amount of bobber fishing. I don't think I will bother with a depth finder on the trolling motor. I am leaning toward moving my Garmin depth finder from my old boat to the new one, just because I am so used to it and it works well for me. I am 70 years old and kinda set in my ways...
    • Dang, new content and now answers.   First, congrats on the new boat!   My recommendation is to get the most thrust you can in 24V, assuming a boat that size isn’t running 36V.  80 might be tops?  I’m partial to MinnKota.     How do you plan to use the trolling motor is an important question too.     All weather or just nice weather?   Casting a lot or bait dragging?   Bobber or panfish fishing?   Spot lock?  Networked with depth finders?  What brand of depth finders?
    • We have bought a new boat, which we will be picking up this spring. It is an Alumacraft Competitor 165 sport with a 90 horse Yamaha motor. I will be buying and installing a trolling motor,  wondering if I can get some recommendations on what pound thrust I will want for this boat?  Also, I will be selling my old boat, is there a good way to determine the value on an older boat ( mid-80's with a 75 horse 2-stroke  Mariner motor)  I will appreciate any help with these questions.
    • Sketti...  not out of a jar either!
    • Lol yeah I watched that
