To all my fellow hunters who have had to put there friend down.
I can now say I feel your pain.
My friend was 13 1/2 years old. I felt she lived a good life. My intentions when I bought her was to have her go and get my ducks so that I wouldn't have to chase them with the boat any more. She did that and more.

I know in my heart that I will never have a duck dog like her again. I may have a dog that will handle to a blind retrieve, or swim faster but never, ever will her heart or desire, her sheer love to get in the boat be matched!! She was always the 1st one in the boat or on the dock, no matter how cold or wet it was.

If there was a choice to go in the woods on a 30 degree late October day or go sit in the blind or sit on her submerged rock by the blind she would choose the rock.

I just can't express the love I had for this dog. She never quit on me.
God I miss her! She will always be my #1.
We love you & miss you dearly ALLY.
GOD BLESS YOU AND MAY YOU REST IN PEACE!!

You have my sympathy. I recently posted on here about losing my dog Moose. The pain gets less with time, but never goes completely away. And you wouldn't want it to. The person who said you can't buy love never bought a dog. Take care.

I completely understand your loss. It has been a year last spring that I had to put my friend of 15 years down. She was not a hunting dog, just a very good friend. I believe that she knew what I was thinking and I knew what she was thinking. She knew when something was bothering me and she would try to make me feel better and vis- versa. I never thought that I would be able to survive without her. It was hard to be alone with out her and still think about her alot. A few months after I had to put her down I found a lab. Some people told me to wait, I wanted a pup, but also felt guilty. This lab pup was going to be adopted, on my way there to get him, I thought about my buddy Nikki and couldn't do it. I called the people later that day to see if Sam was adopted and he wasn't. Then I knew that he was ment for me. I drove about 2 1/2 hours to the place and picked him up. This dog will never replace my Nikki, but this dog has introduced me to the fun of bird hunting and I have had alot of fun training and watching this dog enjoy it. I have never had a hunting dog before and have had fun watching him hunt. He will never replace Nikki, but he certainly has been able fill a void and introduce me to alot of fun.
I am sorry for your loss and feel your pain. Sam and I will propbably never have an understanding of each other like Nikki and I, but Sam has deffinetly cost me more money for training supplies, licenses, guns, etc. (ha,ha,ha)and has really given me alot of fun in the year that I have had him. God bless Ally and she will be with my Nikki. Now I know that Nikki will be with great company! God Bless, my thoughts are with you.

duckbuster, I can feell your pain, less than two weeks ago I put down my old dog. Last night, for the first time, I visited where we buried her. I know we did the right thing putting her down, she wasn't enjoying life anymore, in fact she was in pain. The last two weeks good memories of her pop up, how she loved duck hunting, she'd be sitting right beside me panting away as we waited for that first flight of ducks, how she'd bark in the back of the truck all the way to the hunting spot, how she liked 'bobbing for minnows' in my minnow bucket, how she liked following where I'd mowed and giving the shoulder roll to any snake or rabbit that had been wacked - only after she had sampled it of course! They become such a big part of your life for years! Keep the good memories and when the time is right, get another one to enjoy the great outdoors with!
