Injured dog

Recommended Posts

Question for you guys. I had a stray black lab puppy (5-7mos)(pure-bred based on appearance) come into my yard and he had a badly damaged left rear leg and hips. I put signs up around my town in an effort to find the little guys owner. I couldn't let it hobble around lame so I took it to the vet and was willing to pay for him to get repaired if they could. After some X-rays the vet told me he was in worse shape than we thought. His hips had both been dislocated, one managed to relocate; his femur had been broken, his tibia had been broken and his knee was severely damaged. The vet said there really wasn't much that could be done. If the leg was removed, he could function three-legged but, since the other hip had been damaged he might not get many years. I am not in a position where I can handle another dog...My question is, does anyone know of any associations that accept these types of animals? In Denver, where I lived for a while, they had such associations where people could adopt pets that had been abused, busted up and repaired, etc. Are there any in the Twin Cities? I would need to move on this fast because he's scheduled to be put down in a few days.

Great Idea Jigglestick,
BB88, Sounds like the pup was destined to be yours. I know when I was lucky enough to find my Lab pup last year at a foster home, that he was mine. If only the person that found out he couldn't get papers for him after he got him and was going to shoot him, could see how this pup enjoys hunting, he would have given a second thought. I think the dog is training me more than I am training him. Like Jigglestick said, if people are willing to help pitch in a little...
The 'Ol green backs are a little tight so I would not be able to help out a ton of a cash amount, but you can count me in.

I appreciate the concern and advice you guys provided. It truly is a bad situation. I originally took the dog to the vet and they said he was so busted up he was going to have to be euthanized. They had to wait 5 days since he was a stray. The gals at the vets fell in love with Ivan ( I named him) and I subsequently tried to find a shelter that would take him and I volunteered to help pay for some of the surgery. I found one in Hastings that would take him in. The vet said it was not an issue of cost...They have discretionary funds to help with this. They told me they were going to try everything they could to save him . They even brought in an Orthopedic vet from the U to look at him He unfortunately had the same prognosis. He would never be able to live without a large amount of pain. Additionally he would be crippled in a few years. They made a professional call...He was put down ion Wednesday Morning. Like I said a sad deal. Thanks again.

BB,

Yes, a sad deal but you did the best you could and went out of your way to help out. Many wouldn't have done as much. Unfortunately sounds like the little guy would not have had a good life so the right decision was also the toughest.
