Residents and nonresidents alike can fish anywhere in Wisconsin for free, with not licenses or trout stamps needed. This includes all inland waters and Wisconsin’s side of the Great Lakes and Mississippi River.

Note that all of Wisconsin's regulations still apply though. One of those regulations is group bagging; you can only keep 1 limit even if you are giving those fish to your friends. If 5 guys want to keep 5 limits, each guy must keep their own limit. So don't just try to bring a couple bodies with so you can keep more fish; those guys have to be catching too.

I've never fished in Wisconsin. Are there any lakes within an hour or so of the north metro I would be missing out on if I don't go fish there this weekend?

Minnesota has Take-a-Kid fishing (one in the winter and one in the summer) and Take-a-mom fishing days, which is kind of the same I guess.

Wisconsin does this in the summer also. It's great for families that don't get to go much or can't afford a license.
