Windows 7 not waking after hibernate or sleep

Recommended Posts

Shack, can you help me out, maybe you have seen this. I have a dell inspiron 1545. I never shut it off, usually just close the lid. Lately when I open it, windows doesn't wake and I have to reboot. I get the start up in safe mode message and it is really slow to open. I have Kaseya and dont think it is a virus or malware but I could be wrong.

Have you tried quickly pressing the power button to un-sleep the PC? Also what do you have your power settings set at?

You may have to set "wake" to occur when the monitor is opened. There is a setting for this and some times Win updates can change your settings on you without you even knowing or if you have adjusted your power settings.

I am going to guess your warning on re-boot is because the PC is still going strong but due to power settings being set to shut down the display when the PC goes to sleep and it not waking up and having to shut down the PC hard causes this message. wink

Pressing the power button used to wake it up, now doesn't. I can tell the computer is still operating, just doesn't wake. I checked the setting and they have not changed I don't think. I used to be able to tap or move the touch pad and it would wake up if the lid was open, no longer. The control panel talks about a sleep button, I am not sure where or what that button is.

This is what I would try at this point.

1. Disable Sleep/hibernate. Reboot.

2. Reboot the laptop.

3. Re enable Sleep/hibernate. Reboot.

4. Test. Be sure once you close the lid you let is sit for 5 to 10 minutes to fully complete the process.

Windows is a but weird about rebooting after making changes to finalize them. If you make changes and have to do a power down it does strange things to the settings. Should it? no. Does it? yes.

If that doesn't work there are some things to try, you can find them with a google search.

Run something like Malwarebytes.

There are lot of things that figure they are so important that they figure they need to run all the time. You can also got to start and on the search line key in msconfig and hit enter. Click on the start up tab and you will see everything that is set to start on boot up. There are something that do need to start, Anti Virus and a few thing that are key to things like the mouse on a laptop. But there are somethings that are pretty obvious that don't need to start. Anything questionable, do a web search and find out what it is, you may be able to disable it starting.

You can try to narrow down those programs in task manager or by typing in "services" in the search box at the bottom of the start menu after you click it. Easy way to narrow out resource consuming programs and services is by clicking the tops of the menus in a certain column. Example in "services" click the top of the running or stopped column and the list groups together services stopped or running.

They could very well be apps that you use. But just because you use them it doesn't mean they need to start at boot up. Just run it for a while and if it starts to slow down again, check to see which ones put themselves back in the startup and slowed things down. And if you don't need them remove them. If you need them, it may be that you can go into the apps options and see if you can disable the start at boot option.

"ALT + PRT SC" will copy the current window to the clipboard as an image, you can then paste into paint and save it as a .jpeg. You can then upload the image here.

But there are so many apps, especially with laptops it may be a bit hard to determine what is valid or not. There are those that are obvious and those that aren't. Will help as best I can.

Gonna preface by saying haven't read the details of every reply, so apology in advance for any duplication.

For doing various screen captures/snips a nice, free program is MWSnap. A Google search should find it for you.

IMO, first thing to do is ensure all your startup programs are enabled (using msconfig/system config) then just go through your list of Add/Remove programs, I forget exactly what it's called in W7, and uninstall anything that you don't need/don't want, particularly browser "helpers", extra tool bars, etc.

Also want to ensure you check if there are any patches/updates that may apply. These may not necessarily be Microsoft. Sometimes you can check the computer mfg. support websites for newer drivers or maybe even BIOS that could be the issue.

Then, as has been mentioned, get a couple of the common malware scanners and CCleaner to clean leftover dump from your computer then check for malware.

When all that's done and if it's still a problem then you can also use msconfig/system config to systematically turn things off one by one to try to see which process is offending.

The guys above probably covered a lot of the options as far as things to check and processes to do.

I would like to add that in some instances that possibly one of your programs could be causing the issue.

I use a program called Safe copy, which runs in the background and keeps a constant off site storage location updated. I dont know why, but over the last year or so, it has caused my laptop to malfunction about 4 times. When you try to open windows explorer, it crashes. The first time it took me a while to figure out, but after that it was a matter of uninstalling the safe copy program and then rebooting and then reinstalling and problem solved. Dont know why it does that or what it interferes with that out of the blue causes problems. But it could be one of your programs getting corrupted some how too.
