Lookin for 2 3/4 #3 steelshot magnum

Recommended Posts

I would pick up the phone and call around .. somebody has to have some.

I will keep my eyes open when I'm out... no promises on locating any. #2's work well also and theres only 41 less pellets in a 1 1/8oz load.

That $6.50/box ammo is probably Kent fast steel. Im not saying its bad ammo because its not .. It will kill birds, even at a much longer range than most manufacturers ammo .. but heres the downfall to the super-high velocity shells. The only way to get the muzzle velocities safely is reducing the amount of shot. You will still have a tight pattern on close shots, but longer shots will have considerable gaps in the pattern. It is possible to miss a bird, or hit it with 2 pellets vs. 5 pellets. Look at the amount of shot. The average factory shell has 1 1/4oz - 1 3/8 oz of shot. Its a big difference if your load only has 3/4 or 7/8.

Example .. these numbers are exact with steel shot.

#4 shot
7/8oz= 165 pellets
1 1/4oz= 235 pellets

#BB shot
7/8oz= 62 pellets
1 1/4oz= 87 pellets.

Hey I like worms, I think the shell's you are thinking of might be PMC,they are really cheap! We have shot them in the past but had nothing but trouble with them! I was going to try fast steel this year,I've heard some good things on It,& if it work's can't beat the price, around $9 a box!

I think your right Duckhunter28 .. forgot about the PNC... I guess sometimes things seem like a bargain until you try them.

$9 a box is a good price .. can barely reload them for that with the best components. I still will stick to reloads, I guess I feel better personally knowing exactly what is in the shell, and I know that i'm taking great measures to protect my gun also. Steel shot can be rough on the barrel.

I got a whole case. steel #3's 2 3/4 they are something like PPM. Some italian jobbers. I shot them last year, they are pretty good. I didn't notice any difference. Just gave me an excuse to blame when I missed. And the best thing is the price. $6.50 a box. Cabella's had them last year. This year I got them through my dad, who got them through a friend, so not really sure where he found them. But like I said, give cabella's a call.

I've shot PMC shells for two years. Bought a bunch of 2 3/4 inch #5's to go pheasant hunting. They worked great. I've had no problems with their steel shot either. I think they worked just fine. I'm not sure on the amount of shot but will check and let you know after lunch. I seemed to have no problem hitting ducks last year or geese this year.

Flashman,

I know faststeel are made for ultra-high velocity .. not sure about the PMC shells. They're probably an average load (shot, velocity) built with cheaper components. I know the hulls are cheap... but in most cases that really doesnt matter if they are only getting fired once and their not causing your gun to jam. Im sure the factory has a safe load in them for the strength of the hull.

I'll be the 1st to admit I go overboard on shells. I use the best components available and make excessively heavy shells. But I have confidence in them, and that plays a big part. We can only hunt so many days a year and if im not getting birds when im getting shooting, its positively because of me, not the shells.

now that you mention it, it is pmc. I have had no troubles with these shells. I don't skybust, so pattern breakup isn't a problem for me. they work well at 30-40 yards. And I use a rem-870, so I have no jamming problems, but they will tend to jam in an auto-shootie. And as someone posted earlier, you will not be able to reload these shells as the casings tend to tear/rip at the ends. I reload too for trap, but it's hard to reload steel for $6.50/box.
If you want to use premium shells to hunt, that's fine, but keep these shells in mind for chasing down cripples. Chasing a diver can eat up shells, and these work great for turning that $5 duck into a $2.50 duck.
(darn divers, they think they're so smart. grin.gif )

FYI, here is their web address. Might answer your shot velocity questions.
