Star Trail and Orion

Recommended Posts

Went out for half an hour to try and get a shooting star pic. Did 2 15 minutes shots and saw 13. Probably 4 went thru where I was pointed but can't see them in the pic. Still fun trying. :>) The 7 bright trails just above the trees are the big dipper.

Looks good. One issue in capturing shooting stars is the length of time they are in the shot. Normally you see them for a second or two so consider how long your exposure was. 15 minute exposure is not going to show a one second light streak very well! The best you can hope for is to crank up your ISO and shorten your exposure to capture a bit more available light in the sky. In fact milky way shots are done this very way.

I know I spent all night back in 2008 during the Perseids meteor showers at -20F trying to capture those darn buggers! Not one useful shot in one long cold night! I was shooting at ISO 100 and 200. Ideal would be 800 ISO at 30 second exposures. If I would have cranked it to 6400 ISO with about a 10 second exposure I might have had something! Good luck next time out.
