Tumes
Building a crankdown house. Is it best to put the siding vertical or horizontal? Or does it not matter? My house is 8 x 18 and 7 feet tall. The colored sheets come 4 x 10. My thinking is to go horizontal with seem in the middle.
northerndave
I suppose it depends on if you feel like floating the seam or landing the seams directly on studs.
Tumes
Good point...The guys says the 4 x 10 sheets have a inch over lap. If I spray foam the insulation which I plan on doing the floating seem should not be a problem if I go horizontal
northerndave
what are you framing with?
Pallansch
When I built mine I did 2x2 wood framing then used 1/4" plywood on the inside spray foamed it from the outside. So I had solid walls on the inside, then used pine over the plywood. The outside I used .o40 aluminum I got from an enclosed trailer company out of Elkhart, Indiana for 70$ per sheet 84"x49" sheets, any color. Tumes
I used 2x3 wood on the walls. I think I will go with the same size aluminum .040 on the walls. North Central Speedway in Brainerd has 4x10 colored sheets for $70. Not sure if they have the 4x8 sheets for less. If they have 4x8 sheets then I think I will go vertical so the seems are on the studs. Is that the way you went?
Pallansch
I went with vertical starting in the back, working to the front. So the wind/ moisture doesn't get in when towing.
northerndave
sounds like a winner.

Lip_Ripper Guy
You can do a horizontal seam, but you may have a problem where 4 sheets come together. It'll take some creativity to get that all stuck together and sealed.
Tumes
That is what I was thinking. With the 4x10 sheets and my house being 18 feet long I can stagger the seem. But my hope is that I can get the 4x8 sheets and go vertical.

fishingman80
would vinyl siding be a good choice for fish house siding? i got a house worth of vinyl siding from a house i worked on with the company i work for.
minnbowhunter
I have an older Ice Castle with the vinyl siding. It gets super brittle in the cold, and can crack. I would say it works but would put aluminum at least part way up in the front to protect from damage on the road. A chunk of ice coming off a rear tire will put a hole in the vinyl. To be honest mine has held up better than I thought it would, but I have had to repair some damage.

fishingman80
what about a lightweight aluminum siding that is somewhat cheap?

Tumes
I bought my Aluminum at Brainerd speedway. 4 x 8 sheet was $60 bucks for colored. $55 I think with standard white.

Hawg
Question for you builders. Tunes is the first house I've seen with the angled supports in the end walls. My first thought was that was a great idea. As I thought about it I'm guessing any extra support is a plus but with foamed walls those studs couldn't move if they wanted to, could they? My only idea for you Tunes is to consider more windows before you finish. Great start though. I'm watching every one of these threads because even though I've built lots of 8x12's and 6x8 houses, this is my first big bucker. Just one more thing, shouldn't the door go over the siding? cavalierowner
I think the diagonal bracing is an excellent idea. I think you might be surprised how much a wall could rack even with foamed walls when driving down the road. It certainly is cheap insurance. The only time you probably wouldn't need it is if one of the sides of the studs had plywood. Think home construction.
Tumes
Hawg. You are right. If I was to do it all over again I would have put two windows on the side opposite the the door. But I can live with what I have.
