amateurfishing
Maybe fad was a poor choice of words, perhaps I should have used 'trend'. Only time will tell. I apologize if I ruffled any feathers. no feathers ruffled, just wondering why u were calling it a fad & demonizing something that did not work for u but may for others
UKCM
So I got a fly reel setup last year. I was catching some really nice bluegills in about 6 foot of water and the rod and reel performed well. But guess what, my lure was still spinning when I put it down the hole. Why.....cause bluegills especially nice ones swim in circles. Conclusion, Fly reels minimize spinning lures, they do not eliminate it, least not with gills. Fishin4fun_MN
the lure is always gonna spin a little. it is the nature of it. If you (or I) were hanging from a rope and were lifted and dropped and lifted and dropped we would spin too.
UKCM
Yep, I agree, but to my point the fly reels minimize, not eliminate spinning. And if I was hanging from a rope, I would be a yelling and a screaming while I was spinning My lures are much quieter
mww24
I don't know how much yelling and screaming you'd be doing hanging from a rope. LOL After I have a nice fight with a big fish especially if it did the circle dance I stretch out the last few feet of line tied to the lure by hand. It helps take some of that out to eliminate more twist.
DRH1175
I am very intersted in them. I called them a fad because that is what a salesman suggested to me at their store. He thought they would be hot for a couple years and then most would go back to the spinning rigs. I am intersted because of the fact of eliminating line twist. Just wanted everyones opinion and what they thought on them. Thanks for input.
Knoc
Ive been using over spooled fly reels for years. I love them. They have their better times and places in fishing, but overall are nice.
slipperybob
I hate the rod pulsing as I get fish on with a spinning rig setup. Well hate is too strong of a word but it bothers me when I lose a fish a few feet to the hole. Baitcaster makes it way too easy. But fly reel set up, deadstick = awesome. Plus love pulling up fish from deep water of 35'+ without their bladder coming out of their mouths.
muskE
Please call it a fad so the prices stay down in the long-term. I've been using fly reels for years. They are easier on the fish and I'm +1 with Slipperybob in that you don't see chewing gum bubbles on deeper fish.
buckeyes08
A pulsing comes from bad guides are in a bad spot or wrong size. I do agree with a fly rod reel setup.
Bob/Mn
Are the Fly rod combo's here to stay or a fad? I am looking to buy one to add to my rod collection. However I was talking to a rod expert who thought it was really just a fad. They become quite clumsy in deeper water. Clam and Genz sells a combo. Yet when you talk to Dave Genz or watch his fishing clips he is always using a spinning rod. I could see where they may be nice in 10 ft of water or so. What's everyones honest thoughts? They are no fad as Eagle Claw and Black Betty got it right this time. Features like, Free spools, star drags, long necks,2.6:1 gear ratios, full sized spools( no need for backing line) and of course little lure spin. Right now you would be very lucky to find a EC inline in Minnesota as all the retailers are sold out.
bee
I fished my EC today in 14 degree weather and the rod eyes iced up but the reel never missed a beat.
