white mallard?

Recommended Posts

While hunting with my son on opener we saw a completely white duck, except for the bill and legs, flying with a flock of mallards. Several groups of hunters shot at the flock and dropped some of the other ducks in the flock but the white one is still flying as far as I know. It must be an albino mallard but it looked a lot like the white domestic ducks you see at county fairs.

Im kinda new to this site and really like duck hunting so this moring I was looking back at some early posts. Just wanted to mention that about 4-5 years ago I used to feed mallards in my front yard in metro area Crystal,Mn (I could say some cool stuff about that) any way one year very early in the spring still lots of snow on the ground there it was a white mallard, I wish I had a camera, it was like you said all white except bill and legs, it was a mallard I couldnt quit looking at it. It must have been migrating north, never saw it again.

My neighbor has one mounted on his wall. He talked to the DNR and a biologist about the why's and how's of this. They told him that it has to do with the incubation period of the egg. When the egg gets to warm it will produce a duckling that has both male and female gene make-up. This than "confuses" the coloring mechinism in the bird. What you end up with is a duck the is a "white" more towards a lack of color rather than white in color.

I was in Southern MN this past weekend for Christmas and saw a white Mallard also. From a distance it looked like an Albino, but when I approched closer, it didn't have the pinkish feet or eyes. It must have been a drake because it had a couple of white curly tails. Also, in the same group of ducks, there was a hen that was noticably lighter in color then the rest. It was a sight!

I just returned from Arizona. I saw one completly white mallard and 4 others that were partially white but still had the markings on the wings, and some other colors showed up around the body. Thought it was wierd and was wondering what would cause this.
