I was under the impression the DSI model had both standard sonar and DSI? Am I wrong on that? If so yeah, the DSI needs steady movement for the best possible picture, and may not be the best choice if you plan on using it on ice.

If it also has standard sonar then you should be fine using just the sonar in the winter.

HB flashers and the Elite 5 DSI both operate on 455 khz, so if both are on that frequency you will get interference. You will need to switch the DSI unit to 800 khz or switch the flasher to 240 khz (narrow beam) to avoid interference.

Down Scan / Down Imaging work far better if you're moving than if you're sitting still. I've never tried it on the ice so I don't know how it will work in that application .... but I think it will not be that good.

The Elite 5 that is giving the Vexs trouble is the Elite 5 Combo unit, they both work on 200 khz.

Anytime the transducer cones overlap you will get interference if you're on the same frequency. The rule of thumb for a standard 20 degree 200 khz transducer is to divide the water depth by 3, and that is about how far away you need to be to not overalp the transducer cones. ie. if you're fishing in 30 fow you will need the transducers 10 feet apart to not overlap. It's just a rule of thumb but it's a starting point. Good luck.

The Elite DSi only has downimaging. It does not have a traditional sonar.

I am not sure if you can purchase a puck transducer and it would work on a DSi or not. Would be a good idea to call Navico (Lowrance) to confirm before you get too far.

i know the elite 5 will work for the ice

but i was under the impression the dsi was an updated version

i bought it from gander mnt and no one there knew a darn thing

so they said if it isnt what i want to return it with in 30 days

so if that is so than i might return it and get a humminbird or the elite 5 or?

i thought i did enof research but i guess i didnt

i have been saving for awhile now for a gps and a new flasher

i thought with a unite like this i would have both

If you want, give us a call or an email and we can help you out and explain the options to you.

Since you liked the DSI enough to buy it, another option might be a Humminbird DI unit. HB DI units will do conventional sonar and down imaging, plus they have a GPS that take LakeMaster or Navionics map cards, so that takes care of most of the things you want. You still won't have an ice-style transducer though ......
