Shot a big one today

Well, I shot a really big buck today. It was about 5:40pm 150-170 yds. It was kind of trotting. I put it right on the tip of the chest and touched off. My brother who was sitting right next to me confirmed that the hind end kicked up, the tail went up, then the tail went down, and its head went downish and ran towards us. It then jumped a fence and ran into the nasty stuff we all fear of losing a deer in. My brother and I are colorblind and can't see red, so finding blood was hopeless. I'm going out with a team of people to help me look for it. I'm sick about it. Ive never missed a deer with a gun, and never have shot twice. First time shooting at a deer trotting, and by far the biggest buck I've ever taken a crack at. My hope is to find it, but my logical mind says we probably wont simply because of the nasty stuff it went into, and because it ran a good 80yds before entering the abyss. We'll see. Keep all fingers crossed for me.

I don't disagree, just saying don't let the predisposed doubt influence you.

Agreed, also just because he headed for the nasty stuff doesn't mean he's gone. You have to dive in there and look for him, it might even be a good sign that he is hurt and heading for thick cover.

Thank you for clarifying, and we can all agree with that.

I'll also say that we as hunters will always have doubts.

But it's how we prepare for and manage them that helps

us to be ethical. As he said he's getting some help tracking,

so I think we should commend him for that.

I'll leave it at that.

Thanks again

Has anyone heard from Kyle? Silence leads me to believe no luck but hopefully it's more a matter of too busy picture taking, dragging, and celebrating. Lets us know if you find him and share some details of the hit and where you found him if successful. Will help us all in the end add a little piece to the puzzle.

Well after a terrible night of no sleep I assembled the team and were in the area I shot the deer by just after 8am. My brother, who was sitting right next to me when I shot the deer got in the stand and called me to direct the team to the exact location of where the deer was when I took the shot. Within just a few minutes all of a sudden someone yells, "I've got blood!" So we all walk over to him, and sure enough a grain of rice sized spot of blood. Immediately my other buddy, who is a blood hound and can stay on a track better than anyone I know follows it to the spot where I saw the buck jump the fence into the abyss. I stood up on my tip toes at the fence thinking I saw something about 10yds in. Sure enough my other buddy says, "I think it's right there". What relief. It was piled up not 10 yds after the fence line. It made for a quick and easy drag under the barbed wire fence and onto the back of the 4-wheeler. Main frame 8, with 2 kicker points(not scorable) and the start of a drop tine on each side of the main beam.

As far as the shot goes. All my years prepared me for this shot and recovery. It wasn't where I normally hit my deer, nor was it a great hit. I look back to the early days, and I know that I would have never been quick enough or savvy enough to pull this shot off. As the deer was trotting at a sharp angle towards me, I saw him step out from some red willows. Had to time it just right before he went into some more willows and out of sight for good; I touched it off. The bullet hit back and got a little bit of lung and liver. This is why there was not a severe amount of blood, and why the deer looked hunched up as it came to the fence last night after the shot.

I was disappointed to see that a coyote had gotten to him before I did, but lucky that it only got one of the hind quarters. Roughed his nose up slightly, but not bad enough that the taxidermist won't be able to fix it. My biggest buck to date. No idea what is scores, don't really care right now. It holds its mass to the end of both main beams, and measured 6.75 inches around at the base. Needless to say, I'm happy. Thanks everyone for the support and crossed fingers. Now if I can just get the picture on here.
