there is no soldiering but there is heat shrink on a couple wires. The installation is explained in the manual that comes with the I-pilot. it tells you what ones to remove and how to route the wiring in the head. One thing I would suggest is that you hold off until spring and then get the I pilot because you will see alot of used but good ones out there for sale when people upgrade to I pilot Link. I know as of right now come April 1st I will be removing my current I-pilot and will be replacing it with the I-pilot Link. at that time I plan to put my current I-pilot up for sale.

Downside of the V2 is being limited to only the remote, all depends on your fishing style if it works for you or not...

this is true until you upgrade to I-Pilot Link then you can run the trolling motor from the remote and hummbird fish finders that have ethernet capabilities. I am planning to upgrade everything on my boat so I can run the I-Pilot Link. the only thing is I don't know if you can steer from the finder I think you still need the remote for that. I will learn more come spring when I pick this up and install it.

I want the I-Pilot Link for trolling for walleyes. I can see your point if you are casting as you are moving. what I have done if I want to work a shore line by casting is I will record a track of the path I want to follow first and then play the recording back and start casting while the motor runs it self. this is where the link will come in nice as it will allow me to record like 50 different tracks for different lakes. I do get your point if you don't like humminbird or don't run them how it wouldn't work and then yes you would need to be on the remote unless you previously recorded the track you want to follow.
