05 Cummins Ignition question

Recommended Posts

The last two mornings when I started my truck (05 Cummins on a 2500 Ram) it fired just a bit later than it normally does (1 or 2 revolutions). When it starts it is rough and sounds like some misfiring going on...almost like the pump has lost the prime.

However after about 10-20 seconds and a little revving it runs normal and drives fine.

Is this a bad injector getting stuck open? If it was a pump starting to go bad, then it would be noticeable going down the road as well not?

How difficult is it to change out an injector?

I'm thinking about doing it myself cause I got 3 days of work this week and then heading to SD hunting. I dont have time to take it to a shop (being need for work) but dont want to be stuck in SD with truck not working.

Is is not a tough job to replace the injector but you might want to have it tested since you don't know which, and they are around $ 800 each.

To remove it you will have to pull the rocker valves off from the cylinder involved, then loose the injector and with a special tool pull it off. When you reassemble you will have to adjust all the valves.

Have you considered the valve cover gasket ? It has the injectors wiring harness built in, and it's notorious to go bad sometimes.

I found a you tube video by thoroughbred diesel and it showed how to do it...doesn't look that hard but time is short this week. Got to get a bunch of clean ups done so I can hit the road by Thursday AM. Going to see if dealer can get it in today to take a look.

Your right, i have no way of knowing which injector is acting up, so it would be a cr@p shoot to replace one and put it back together and start it up and if its the wrong one, do it over again...

Not a mechanic by any means here, but it only acts up in the first 10-20 seconds of start up...going down the road it accelerates fine and idles fine after start up...Just seems like a bad injector.

Thought I would update this topic.

I had taken to dealer cause I needed it fixed by Wed last week due to heading to SD hunting on Thursday AM.

They got me in right away and diagnosed it as having 2 bad batteries. I never noticed any problems with light dimming, slow starter etc. Considering both batteries were Die-Hard's and only 2 years old it seemed weird to me. Well they changed them out and everything is working fine now. I guess plowing is hard on your batteries...
