I believe the FL-8 has a three zoom function, no? Or if not three, different depths via the switch.

it is the different depth settings. it should read 1,2,4, & either 6 or 8 (I don't remember forsure). you multiply that number by 10 and that is the depth you are set at. example if you were to fish 30 feet of water you would put it on 4(or 40ft). if you were in 15 feet you put it on 2(or 20ft). the Fl8 does not have a zoom feature on it. the other vex units have what is called bottom lock which is the zoom. if the unit has bottom lock the screen will split and the left half of the screen will show the bottom 5 feet zoomed in.
