Patternmaster code black

Recommended Posts

I am looking at getting one of the code blacks and was wondering if anyone is using them and how they like them and which one they have. Reading up on them the duck is a full for the 2 3/4 and 3" and mod for 3.5 and the goose is full with any shot. Question I have is my gun can only shoot up to 3" so to get best of both worlds I was thinking of getting the goose choke and guessing it will be able to reach out farther.

What's everyone's input?

Thanks

I bought the Code Black Duck earlier this year and have used it all fall. Shoot primarily 3-inch No. 2s and 4s through it. I've been impressed. It's a tight shot, and seems to work as advertised. I have noticed that the Federal Blue Box shells pattern a lot better than Winchester Supremes.

I have noticed a large reduction in crippled birds. They either die when I hit them, or get away clean. I'd rather have that than a bunch of wounded birds swimming around the marsh. Sure makes you bring your A game to the hunt when the margin of error is so small. I like it, and Remy appreciates not having to chase ducks all over the place. wink

So I decided to buy the patternmaster choke for my stoeger. I put it on and the choke doesn't go flush all the way to the barrel. Will this harm it at all or should I not even shoot it. The gap is really small by 1/16 of an inch. Just dont want to blow out the choke or my barrel.

Thanks

First chance I got to clean a bunch of ducks that I knew 100% were only shot by me. Pretty much confirmed what I thought had been going on all season. You'd best be proficient with your gun and not prioritize the use of every ounce of available meat. Shooting the goose choke primarily Fiocch Speed Steel 3" 3 shot 1 1/8 oz at 1500 fps. Devastating on birds from 15-50 yards for majority of my shots. Can literally hear a smack when you connect out to 30 yards or so. Guessing my longest shot with this combo was in the 60 yard range on a overhead passing speck. Seeing less cripples but at the expense of some very shot up birds. Made mistake of leaving it in on a pheasant walk. Not much left to clean. The drawback I see is an average or less shooter not getting much leeway with the super tight pattern and getting frustrated.

Impressive isn't it. Not a head shot or a wingtipper either. Caught it in that fold between leg and body. I'm sold on this choke and cheap $11/box shells. Kinda wasted some $ having wifey get me a black cloud choke too. May still use that on late season Rochester birds but at least won't have to buy caseloads. Did throw the word guess in my range estimate. Long direct overhead shots are pretty hard to judge. Nothing to give perspective. Know it was longer than 50 as thats about my limit over the decoys and have a pretty good handle on judging that range. Was it 65 or longer? Doubtful with 3 shot. So let's say 55-60 and 60 sounds better than 55 wink

    • As a recovering machinist, I can appreciate that.  If the spec is 0.001 - 0.0015, then clearly the correct measurement is 0.00125, duh…
    • I just figured that it is easy enough to just get a 3 bank so when the boat is not in use I can keep all 3 batteries charged. I have not bough a charger yet, maybe I will give it some more thought. Edit: After thinking this over, with the size, weight, and heat output of the charger (as well as the cost) I think it makes sense to just buy a 2 bank charger, I have a smaller charger i can use on the starting battery when the boat is sitting at home. Forgive me, for i am a retired engineer and I have to obsess over everything...
    • Congrats on the motor!  I think you’ll like it.   I can’t say much on the charger location but I’ve seen them under the lid in back compartments and under center rod lockers.  160 degrees is more than I expected to hear.   Curious why you’re opting for a 3 bank charger with a 24V trolling motor.  Unless you don’t feel you be running you big motor enough to keep that battery up as well?
    • I did buy an Minnkota Ulterra, thanks for the recommendations. I had a bunch of Cabela"s bucks saved up, which helped. Now i need to get an onboard battery charger. Where do you guys mount these things in your boat? The manufacturer I am looking at {Noco genius) says tht their 3-bank charger will run at 160 degrees, seems like a lot of heat in an enclosed compartment? Thanks for any input on this.
    • You're very lucky a troop of Sea Monkey's didn't carry you away.
    • Wasn't terrible at a state park beach. Antelope island maybe.  I wouldn't recommend it as a beach destination tho.  Figured I was there, I'm getting in it.
    • The water looked and smelled disgusting with hundreds of thousands of birds sh*tting in there.  About as gross as the Salton Sea. When I duck hunted there I didn't even want to touch the water.
    • It's kinda gross with the algae in the summer but I got in it anyway.  Wanted to see the increased bouyancy at work.  You can kinda tuck yourself into a ball and you'll just float with your head above water.  When dry off you look diamond encrusted with the salt.
    • We went to the flats too. I dipped a tire on the rental car onto it just to say I’ve been there, but it was still pretty soft from winter melt. After seeing some moron in a BMW suv get dragged out of the muck I had no intention of repeating his stupidity.
    • I've been out on the flats. It's like being on a different planet
