Chest freezer problems

Boar

Question

Have an older chest freezer that was working great. Shot a bear an an qucikly quatered it an stuck it in the freezer to cool down, well the next day the meat was not froze an almost room temp quickly transfered meat to other freezers an a disaster was missed. But now my freezer dont freez. It couldnt keep up with the temperature of the meat. Bear reatins heat well cause of the fat factor un like deer. So the freezer had to work really hard to get to cool down. When al was said an done I tried the freeze again an put in beef scrap that I use for bait, it seem to freez fine but then slowly went out leaving a upper part of the freezer frosty an lower portion of the freezer un cooling, the beef scraps would drain of bloood an that wasnt even frosne on the bottom of the cooler. once again i took everything out an to other freezers an cleaned it up, pluged it in an set a bottel of water in the bottom an it has not frozen but I have frost in the upper top wall s of the freezer. Is the compressor shot?

most likely a freon leak, freezer should have a frost pattern from top to bottem inside freezer walls. These types of freezers should never be loaded up with unfroze meat. 5-8 lbs at a time. If too much unfroze meat is added everything in the freezer could thaw out. Meat lockers freeze the meat in a much colder freezer. your freezer gets to about 0 degrees and it is not cold enough to freeze large amounts of meat. You do have a serious prob and if its old it probably takes R-12. Hard to find. there is a possibility that the Compressor is taking a dump but either issue is expensive.

How much frost/ice is built up around the top? If its excessivie you should unplug it & let it melt & start over. I would also check to be sure the condenser coil is clean, its gernerally located near the compressor..If that is dirty it will cool to some degree, but not normally. Generally the cooling coils in the wall are up around the top of the unit & not thru the entire wall. Cold air is heavier and will migrate downward. If everything checks out & it still isnt working, time for a new freezer...Its beyond/not worth repair.
