'99 Jeep Cherokee Sport is shaking on freeway

Recommended Posts

If it is a violent shaking of the steering wheel than you have a condition known as death wobble. Especially after hitting a bump at higher speeds.

If you just feel a vibration than its likely a tire issue, either out of balance or possibly a separated tire.

Do you have stock tires?

Lift kit?

What do you have the tire pressure set at?

I will agree with loose front end parts. I will also add that I have seen the lateral link (bar from frame to axle, I may have called it by the wrong name) get sloppy at the frame on the drivers side. I have also seen the holes for the mount on the axle oblong.

If everything is tight than it wouldn't hurt to try a stabilizer shock.

You will want to jack up each side under the axles. Use a pry bar to lift up under the tire to check the lower ball joints, not very common. Push in and pull out on the top of the tire to check the upper ball joints, again not that common. Push and pull at the three o'clock position on the tire to check tie rod ends.

I think the passenger side knuckle has two tie rod ends attached to it. One will tie the two knuckles together. The other is from the gear box. Make sure the one from the gear box is tight at the knuckle.
