Oil weight?

I feel a little foolish asking this question at my age but I honestly would like to hear some expert advice.

I have a 1965 Allis-Chalmers 190XT Series III farm tractor. I have been using 15w-40 motor oil in it since I got it but I can also say that in colder weather that oil can get a bit on the heavy side. I would like to consider using a lighter weight oil during the winter but due to the low hours I put on it annually, changing the oil twice a year at 2.5 gallons a shot adds up to a little expense and environmental waste that I would prefer to avoid if I can.

Can anyone offer a recommendation regarding an all-around oil weight that I can use? Keep in mind that during the spring and fall tillage I do work the tractor rather hard.

5W-40 would be fine in your tractor.

5 40 would be fine, If I understand correctly, 5 40 is the same as 15 40 once it is warmed up, but it "lighter" at start up... Some one please correct me if I am wrong, I do understand it is more complicated than that, but it is how I think of it in simple terms...

Also consider running a good synthetic maybe... it also may help

There is 0-50 synthic sold by john deere that is a good oil.
