Ripley youth Archery Hunt question

I cant Find anywhere on the DNR HSOforum about when or how you are notified if your Child was drawn for the hunt. If anyone has a son or daughter lucky enough to get drawn Id love to hear any tips or advice on how you did and what Kind of experience your son or daughter had. Thanks Alot

my son did it last year. He shot a nice doe. It is a great hunt for them that is for sure. If I remember right you get a packet in the mail if he gets drawn. You will have to go the day before the hunt to a mandatory meeting and there is all different times you can go but then after that you get to go scouting and set stands.

No problem...I am hoping my son will get drawn again. It isn't anything like the big archery hunts either. The spots you hunt on either of the other 2 day hunts may not work out for you for the kids hunt. That is what we learned. Hope your kid gets pulled as well and good luck!

Go to the earliest oriantation you can. after the oraintation you will be allowed to scout and hang stands. Last year a friend gave me 10 differant gps locations of stand sites that they use during the general hunt which is cool but we could not use any of them. the wind was wrong for all of them. We watched a few other groups hang stands in the general areas. My daughter then looked at a map and wanted to check out a great looking spot. Bingo, Nice trails, bottle neck, and wind was perfect. We hung stands and we were going to trim shooting lanes but it looked like they had been trimmed last year. After the hunt I talked about the area to my friend and he said that there is a group that hunts that spot every year.

Take the time to explain everything to your child, Make the weekend about them and let them make the choices.

Sleep in the berricks. very comfy. not to spendy. running water, heat and a chance to be a kid with other kids.

Take lots of pictures.

Bring extra cloths and dress in layers.

I am a snack junky so we brought snacks. My daughter brought a book to read incase we didn't see any deer.

Have fun and remember "Good tings come to those who shoot straight"

All great Points/Ideas Ryan and Nubbin.I will use all your advice If we are Lucky enough to get Drawn. That Kind of shocks me about the Low number of applicants. I love the Barracks and breakfast/Dinner Idea too. My Boy would Love that. I couldnt imagine going in there without a gps but I spose people do it all the time and not a big deal. I would love to see some Pics also. Its Funny, Shooting his bow is the only thing I dont have to harp on him about for Practice. Even hitting Baseballs seems to be too much work for him but not shooting. How Lucky are we that we have teenagers that like to bow hunt.

Hey as far as the gps it is a great idea but you do get escorted up to Casino Rd by Range Control in the morning and also you can buy a great map put out by MSAA Minnesota State Archery Association that has all the roads and contours of the whole base. The map is a fund raiser for these youth hunts. Also if you have a Smart Phone(droid, iphone) you can get a app called Cabelas Recon or Scout Look and that will show most of the roads on a aerial view. I use both.

Hi - my son who is 15 is going to participate for the first time this year. What do most parents do in being 'with' your son/daughter during the hunt? another stand? Any advice/input would be greatly appreciated as I am not an archery hunter myself. Thanks!

What was the last day that you were able to apply for the youth hunt? Usually the next week after that deadline, you will receive you packet. Busy busy time for the DNR at Ripley. The 3 days before the youth hunt, we have a deployed soldiers hunt that they run that coincides with the disabled veterans hunt. Then the youth hunt and right after that they have to get ready for the onslaught of the two regular hunts. They do an exceptional job at giving you your info as quick as possible.

Like RBS said, a GPS isn't really that necessary, but never hurts. The youth hunt is held in the same area as the Deployed soldiers hunt, which is the northern 1/3 of camp, which is from Casino road and north from there. Correct me if I am wrong RBS. Your smart phones will have all the roads shown on them, just not the contours, which is good to have if you want to hunt around Mud Lake and Easy Street.
