Redhorse's

Recommended Posts

My little cousin wants to catch something big from the river. Saw a pic of a redhorse and thinks they are cool. I take him pan fishing and he is now on a kick wanting to catch bigger/differnt fish.

Live in mpls, not affraid to drive a bit. one hour in any direction. Wondering where is a good spot for suckers or other large rough fish? I am guessing the Rum, Miss or St Croix. I have fished the Coon rapids dam and boom island with poor size results and want to make sure he catches something large.

Thanks

Any access point at any of the major rivers will produce. As far as size goes, you just kinda' have to keep your fingers crossed. I really don't think there's much you can do increase your chances of big red horse. With that being said, the biggest ones I have caught were from the mississippi where the crow river flows in, and the croix at the copas landing.

Crow river in Dayton fish the crow or the Mississippi from the Dayton Puplic river access. also the park in Otsego is another great place to walk to for just about any type of fish.

Alot of people shore fish by the Hardman access by the Wakota bridge as well.

Good luck and hope he gets a big one.

In 2008 over the course of three or four weeks in the spring and early summer, I was regularly catching big ones (4-8lbs generally?) at the Coon Rapids Dam.. no idea what kind they were as I'm not well versed in IDing suckers and redhorses.

I haven't caught any there since, in fact that was the only year I had good fishing at the CRD. I still go back now and then, and outside of a few surprise pike, have been disappointed.

I saw some massive white sucker spawning behavior at Mille Lacs in 2010, one of the private marinas had hundreds and hundreds of them spawning right on the concrete of the boat launch. They had no interest in eating.

Beyond that I've been pretty stumped in my attempts to find suckers.
