Buying a used auger?

Hello every one. Im in the market to buy a used auger. Im looking to buy a 10" jiffy or strikemaster. I have found two different jiffy 10" 3hp augers. one is a newer one with the ice armor and ripper blade. Asking about 340 and i found a 8 year jiffy 3hp asking 250, I also found a older strikermaster that is a 2hp 10" for 160.

If it was you what would you chose and why? Go with the newest? I think a 2hp is a little under powered for a 10" auger dont you? Just looking for opinions.

Thing I've found is don't be in too big of a hurry to buy. There will be alot of augers for sale. Obviously ice is a ways away. I know which strikemaster you are talking about and you can get a newer Strikemaster Lazer Mag(tecumseh motor) for $300 if you keep looking. The 2hp tecumseh pushed my 10" auger just fine.

send me a PM and I can give you a name of a shop that has really good prices on factory refurbished strikemasters. this particular shop had a agreement with Strikemaster to buy so many units each fall/winter and because of the price they get from Strikemaster they can sell them cheap. these will all have solo motors on them since this shop sold out of all the old stock with the Tehcumseh motor(refurbs also). last year they had 8,9, & 10 inch models with the 2, 2.5 & 3 HP solo motor. I haven't talked to this shop yet about what they will have this year. I don't know for sure if with the change in ownership of Strikemaster that this shop still has this agreement in place.

So is 160 a bad price for that 2hp 10" strike master? or should I avoid that model all together? I am trying to stay under $300.00 for the auger $250.00 would be ideal but I am open to suggetions. Been some time since I have been in the buying gig for ice fishing equipment.

PM'ed you. I wouldn't go over that for a used 2HP with the Tecumseh simply because of the age of the auger. the Tecumsehs were good engines. it also depends on if the auger was beat up or well taken care of. My 1991 2HP Strikemaster almost looks like new yet except for a few minor blemishes by the air filter.
