I found a funny rock!

Last fall I was fishing for bass on the Root River near Rochester and found this fossil. I'm going to be taking it to a geologist/paleontologist in two weeks, so I'll know for sure then...just thought I'd give you all a little quiz on your ancient invertebrates. For what it's worth, the coin in the photos is a quarter.

Well not long ago they found the remains of a long toothed saber tooth(? I think that's correct)..Who knows.. maybe you found the next new find.. Root River valley area has turned up some interesting fossil finds in the past couple years

Wow! Awesome find ya got there! Im not an expert but from what I can tell it is a Cephalopod Fossil from the ordovician period. Congrats!

Ding ding ding ding, we've got a winner.

Ok, it was kind of a trick question. I was fishing with a guy who works with a geologist, so we had it identified in a week or two. Half of the fun of finding it, though, was trying to figure it what it was. Some of our guesses were a little....off base, to say the least.
