Leech Lake muskies

Recommended Posts

Heading up to Leech Lake August 4th and 5th for the first time. Figure we'd mainly be fishing weedlines and rock reefs, but was wondering if anyone had any pointers to help reduce the learning curve. We'll be staying on Sugar point and probably concentrate our focus on the east end of the lake if possible. Any pointers would help, thanks.

In 2009 I landed my PB 48''er there, off of a reef on a regular size orange-ish colored bulldawg. We also saw some negative fish up shallow on the reefs, just sitting there. I've since heard that orange and/or yellow are good colors for the lake. The reefs were easier for us to find than good weed edges, and I just plain enjoy fishing rocks and rocky structure.

Beyond that I don't have much to suggest, but there was a TON of spots that just yelled at me "cast here this is great habitat for muskies!"

If you are staying on Sugar Point you are in a very good spot. Fish the west side of Portage Bay from Two Points north all the way to Waboose Bay. Take a run down to the Annex Reef and Pelican Island areas as well. Use the biggest darn spinner baits you can find and pack a lunch. You will need it!

I too am fishing leech for the first time for muskies, but a week prior to you. I am going out of Chase on the Lake, but really don't have a clue what I am doing on that lake besides walleye fishing. Trolling during the day? Rocky reefs at night?
