Abu problems

Recommended Posts

I have a 6500C4 that is maybe only a year old or so. Well, recently it has been making a louder noise when i cast. It's not the lock either, so I am wondering if it could need some oil or something and how to go about that. Any commments or help would be appreciated. Thanks.

WIlderness,

Is it a squeel/screech sound when you cast? If so, this is common. Remove the 3 screws on the left side of the reel (opposite side from the crank). Pull the cover off and add a drop or 2 of oil to the end of the brass shaft that runs through the spool. It also doesn't hurt to put a little oil in the recess on the cover that the shaft slides into. That should help the problem if it is the same squeel issue I had in the past. On my reel, this occurs several times per season. If it happens out on the water and you don't have oil with, dunk the reel into the water. Not the best idea but its better than listeneing to the SCREEEM all day.

good luck

Thanks. I appreciate the insight. I'm guessing that it is the same "screaming" that you are referring to 'Rodbuilder'. I will give the oiling a try. Any suggestions of where or what kind to get? Is that Abu Silicon good stuff? Thanks.

Now that I think about it, I am not sure what oil i use. I think its just some off-the-shelf reel oil I bought at Bluewater. I remember that there was a tube of oil in the reel box when i bought it but that was lost/misplaced right off the bat. I would also think vegitable oil would even work. Its clean and non-toxic. But, most sport shops will carry generic "reel oil".

I have the same exact screeching problems with ABU. The frustrating part is that my screeching comes and goes, just when it stops and you think it is OK it starts back up again. Just took them both in to get greased, we'll see....

Either way, I am losing confidence in ABU reels rapidly, last year I had the back piece snap off...

I have been a bit off and on with those reels too. I have an old black max that was replaced free and the new one works great, and I have a 6500 that was once replaced and now works decent too. For the money, they are pretty good, but there are sure a lot of others out there to take a look at

There is an oil called Militec (weapons grade) that is very effective in lubing the ends of reel shafts. www.militec.com
Firearm actions really love this stuff too.

Hang in there with the Abu reels. The Calcuttas must be nice because a lot of TV fisherman use them. As a blue collar angler I'd rather have three Abu than one Calcutta.

Sounds like you guys have bearing problems, put a drop of oil on each bearing that should quiet them down. You will probably have to replace the bearing if there screeching when you cast. The oil will be a quick fix but it will start makeing noise again. The trick is to keep them lubed up before they start to make noise.

I have the "Morum" as well.I shot some "Rem Dri"on all the gears and gadgets and just routine maint. and I never had this problem again. You can get Rem-Dri at most shooting/outdoor stores. It's a teflon lube that evaporates.I use it on anything that should move freely.Try it on the seat for a "Fish trap" seat... hang on

Bop on over to any good reel vendor and pick up some tubes of "Hot Sauce". It comes in both a grease and oil version. Cool thing about it is that it bonds with the metal and REALLY does a good job. I spent some time last winter cleaning all the reels and putting on the grease or oil depending on the place. Wow!! Every reel spun easier and got quieter, even the newer ones. I highly recommend the stuff. I've even used the oil version on my handguns...

where could i order a replacemnt part for my Abu, the gear that turns the bail is stripped out, i can replace it i just need the piece, anyplace that i can just mail order that part, i dont want to send in the reel because i know i can fix it and that would just be a waste of money.

Wilderness55, your problem is often thought as bearing problems. Add a little oil to your brake blocks to take care of the squeal. If the noise comes back time and time again THEN look to the bearings.

riverrat56, check out fishingreelrepair.com for your levelwind and pawl parts. Good service and parts.

good luck

Another source of the screeching / squealing might be the plastic gear under the left side plate. It is driven by the spool and in turn drives the levelwind. Take the three screws out on the left plate as before and put a small amount of reel grease on both sets of teeth on the white plastic gear. This has solved the problem for me in the past.

    • By The way that didn't work either!! Screw it I'll just use the cellular.
    • It’s done automatically.  You might need an actual person to clear that log in stuff up.   Trash your laptop history if you haven’t tried that already.
    • 😂 yea pretty amazing how b o o b i e s gets flagged, but they can't respond or tell me why I  can't get logged in here on my laptop but I can on my cellular  😪
    • I grilled some brats yesterday, maybe next weekend will the next round...
    • You got word censored cuz you said        B o o b ies….. haha.   Yeah, no… grilling is on hiatus for a bit.
    • Chicken mine,  melded in Mccormick poultry seasoning for 24 hours.  Grill will get a break till the frigid temps go away!
    • we had some nice weather yesterday and this conundrum was driving me crazy  so I drove up to the house to take another look. I got a bunch of goodies via ups yesterday (cables,  winch ratchet parts, handles, leaf springs etc).   I wanted to make sure the new leaf springs I got fit. I got everything laid out and ready to go. Will be busy this weekend with kids stuff and too cold to fish anyway, but I will try to get back up there again next weekend and get it done. I don't think it will be bad once I get it lifted up.    For anyone in the google verse, the leaf springs are 4 leafs and measure 25 1/4" eye  to eye per Yetti. I didnt want to pay their markup so just got something else comparable rated for the same weight.   I am a first time wheel house owner, this is all new to me. My house didn't come with any handles for the rear cables? I was told this week by someone in the industry that cordless drills do not have enough brake to lower it slow enough and it can damage the cables and the ratchets in the winches.  I put on a handle last night and it is 100% better than using a drill, unfortatenly I found out the hard way lol and will only use the ICNutz to raise the house now.
    • I haven’t done any leaf springs for a long time and I can’t completely see the connections in your pics BUT I I’d be rounding up: PB Blaster, torch, 3 lb hammer, chisel, cut off tool, breaker bar, Jack stands or blocks.   This kind of stuff usually isn’t the easiest.   I would think you would be able to get at what you need by keeping the house up with Jack stands and getting the pressure off that suspension, then attack the hardware.  But again, I don’t feel like I can see everything going on there.
    • reviving an old thread due to running into the same issue with the same year of house. not expecting anything from yetti and I already have replacement parts ordered and on the way.   I am looking for some input or feedback on how to replace the leaf springs themselves.    If I jack the house up and remove the tire, is it possible to pivot the axel assembly low enough to get to the other end of the leaf spring and remove that one bolt?   Or do I have to remove the entire pivot arm to get to it? Then I also have to factor in brake wire as well then. What a mess   My house is currently an hour away from my home at a relatives, going to go back up and look it over again and try to figure out a game plan.           Above pic is with house lowered on ice, the other end of that leaf is what I need to get to.   above pic is side that middle bolt broke and bottom 2 leafs fell out here is other side that didnt break but you can see bottom half of leaf already did but atleast bolt is still in there here is hub assembly in my garage with house lowered and tires off when I put new tires on it a couple months ago. hopefully I can raise house high enough that it can drop down far enough and not snap brake cable there so I can get to that other end of the leaf spring.
