Best time to fish Mississippi?

Doing a float trip from Clearwater and wondering the best time to go. High water makes it a no go for awhile. When is the fishing the best in that area on the river? We are after smallies and eyes, but mostly smallies.

Honestly, I don't think it really matters after summer gets here (and the water drops, as you say). My favorite smallie days are the dog days of summer....hot and high sun.

So far the best fishing on the sippi this year was in march and april! But I agree.. Dog days of summer.. evenings to be more specific.. can be absolutely the best time for fishing on the river.. fall is a great time too.. everything big is in the big river... and they've all got their feed bags on.. good time to tie into a big ol pike or walley

true. hit a 29" northern on a 6 wt tuesday night, almost took me into the drink with it. slab picked up a pike as well...really dark colors in this area of the sip.

That area is on my list to float this summer as well. Hopefully sometime in July or August for some topwater smallies.

Ted - hit us up for some locations...would be nice to get out on the water with some fellow fly anglers
