JIvers
My family and I are making a fishing trip up to the Alexandria area the third week in June; we are staying on Osakis, which has no muskie. The three lakes in the area that have muskie are Miltona, Lobster, and Oscar, or so the DNR tells me. Any tips on which of the three offers the best muskie fishing? If the walleye fishing on Osakis goes well, I plan to load up my boat and spend a day or two looking for muskie while I am up there.
RuKiddingMe
'eyehunter,Your are right there are only those three lakes. I don't beleive Oscar would be a good choice I have heard there is much for a fishable population. Lobster and Miltona would be your best choices. Given the dates you'll be there your better bet might be Lobster, Miltona is a big and deep clear lake and the Muskies may not be as active yet as they would be over on Lobster. This is just what I'm thinking given the weather so far, I would check back as you get closer to leaving. Miltona has some true pigs, I have yet to hook but I have seen them. Lobster also has some big girls maybe not as many as Miltona though. No matter which you choose I'm sure you'll see some fish.RUAlso stop in at Alexandria Outfitters and talk to Ghoteirman from this board he'll be able to fill you in on the latest and great from each lake. JIvers
Thanks for the info--if anyone needs it, I can give some tips on muskies down here in SE Iowa.
WaveWacker
I'd have to second what RU said. Miltona usually fires up mid to later in the summer.
barnyard
Lobster has lots of very cool structure. You should have a ton o fun.Tom B
LandSeller1
'Eye Hunter,All three lakes are excellent for skis. Lobster has pretty good structure and pretty good weed growth that time of year, not alot of cabbage but enough to hold a few fish. Most of the weeds are a type of milfoil. Pitch anywhere when you find a break. I have good luck with jerk baits on that lake.Oscar is a fun lake to fish, lots of sunken timber like they have down south. Good topwater and buzz-bait lake. The snake northerns will keep you busy until you find a muskie willing to eat, but there are some big girls in there. There is too much to say about Miltona to fit here, get a good Lake Master map from FM and you will see what I mean.Send an e-mail and I will try to help you out.Scott S------------------www.alexproperty.com
JIvers
Topwater fishing for muskie--I've never tried that, but I have thought about it. Down here, it would probably work good too, although I don't know anyone who does. I use mostly bucktails or big jigs with grubs and skirts this time of year (no closed season in most of Iowa), and big spinnerbaits later in the summer, when the slop gets really bad--they do get results. Jerkbaits and bucktails just collect too much salad by July. Thanks again for the info--I've fished the Alex area before, but I've never tried muskie in that area. ghotierman
eyehunter...the guys here have given you great tips. Miltona and Lobster are being managed as great muskie lakes. Miltona in particular has potential to be trophy class water. The DNR is doing a survey on the lake this season...(see the muskie diaries post) and hopefully the data collected will strengthen the stocking program. stop in when you're in town and we'll compare notes. I boated my first last summer...not crazily affected with esox fever, but will definately be on the hunt again this year...check out the alexandria are forum as well.good luck and good fishing!------------------Alexandria Outfitters915 Hwy 29 N NEAlexandria, MN 56308(320) 763-9598
Lund 95
Fished Lobster on opening day with little success. Managed to raise 3. Ranging form mid 30's to mid 40's. Only one taker that got lost before we had a good look at it. AT least we had decent weather. Did anyone else manage to hook up with any in the area? fishing 101
How are things in this area going now? Looking at trying to get out the 26th and 27th. Are they heating up yet?
RuKiddingMe
Was on Lobster over the weekend only seen 2 fish. Talked to another that only seen a couple also, none in the boat. This goofy weather isn't helping anything...RU
